Previously I've run this sim in everything from XP to Win7 with no problems at all. Never even had to reinstall, just copy from one system to the next.

Now I'm stuck with Win11, and trying to get games working in it. There are three installs of NR2003 - one default and two of the GTP mod (one converted for open wheel cars). When I start any of them the main menu appears normally but immediately there is a popup about "This program does not appear to be completely installed. Reinstall and try again." No idea if this is a Sierra popup or a windows popup, have never seen it before. In either of the GTP mod installs I "OK" that popup, it disappears and the sims run normally, good graphics, sound, control, no problems. In the main install the game shuts down after clicking "OK" to that popup. In another forum someone mentioned if you immediately click anything on the main menu screen after okaying that popup the game will continue, well that works, but in my case navigating the menus now takes an excruciating time. Select anything, "Opponent Manager" for example, it will take a minute or so for that window to appear, select a car, another minute for its data to appear, and in the preview window, instead of the image slowly revolving, it stutters and jerks, occasionally pausing for 20-30 seconds. Click "Back" to return to the main menu, and a minute or so later that menu appears. All this time Fraps is showing 300+ fps. Once in the car on the track everything is fine.

I have compared the cfg and ini files between the three installs and see nothing to account for this idiocy.

That's weird. It should be running as smooth as butter on Windows 11 with the newly decrypted v1.2.0.1 executable.
Can you elaborate on your PC's specs for starters? Just wondering if something went amiss during the game's installation process or if some software is creating a conflict in between.

Greetings.

Well, the last time I installed NR2003 it was on an XP system, ca. 2005. It has been copied from system to system ever since. The new system is Win11, i7 something or other (8 core, 3.6gig), 256gig NVMe, 16gig RAM, GTX1070 8gig; I moved my entire games drive (2tB WD Black SATA) to the new system. All my other sims (GPL, GTL, GTR2, rfactor, RBR, Rally Trophy) worked with minimal tweaks beyond calibrating and assigning controls (had to get a new wheel also, no W11 drivers for my old one).

Pretty good specs right there. Unfortunately that particular GPU -GeForce GTX1070- just went deprecated by nVidia since November 2025 with the latest Game Ready Driver being v581.80 and its latest GeForce Security Update Driver being v582.66 from June 16th. It might work fine nonetheless....

One thing you can try is to rerun the NR2003 Graphics Setup Utility to set the rendering method -Direct3D being the best one-, resolution and color depth. Can also look for the Core configuration file inside the main game folder and set the following parameters accordingly:

*[FileLRUCache]
CacheSize (It should read as "14194304")

*[Memory]
MaxBlockSize
PoolSize
(Those values must be the same exact ones. Minimum is "524288" IIRC.)

....followed by either the Rend_DXG or Rend_GL configuration files:
*AnisotropicLevel
*TextureSetSize

....finishing up with your Player profile configuration at either....

C:\Program Files\Papyrus\Nascar Racing 2003 Season\Players\Your_Name (x86 Windows)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Papyrus\Nascar Racing 2003 Season\Players\Your_Name (x64 Windows)
D:\Games\Papyrus\Nascar Racing 2003 Season\Players\Your_Name (x86/x64 Windows)

....and scroll down to the following:

[Graphic Options]
*draw_ahead_distance=100
*draw_behind_distance=100
*enable_CarMegaShader=1
*enable_ShadowVolumes=1
*texture_quality=100

Don't forget to 'load and apply the Large Address Aware Patch to the game's executable; It allows for better compatibility of 32-bit softwares and games on 64-bit versions of Windows.

System is brand new, delivered at end of May; so I assume has the latest drivers (of course we're dealing with Micro$oft - your system is antiquated if it hasn't been updated within the past 15 minutes; and I intercept a dozen requests per day of MS processes wanting permission to phone home). Vid driver is 32.0.15.6603, dated Oct 2025.

Core.ini is fine, same for all three installs; cache size is normal, blocksize and poolsize are 2097152.

Rend_dx is the same for all,
AnisotropicLevel=0
TextureSetSize=2114306048

My player ini files are in the players folder in the N2003 install folder(s), values same as yours except draw distances set to 60.

All my older games have the 4gig patch; I've even encountered a few that must have affinity set to a single core to run properly (Thief3, for example). And I've found over the years most of my games run better in D3D; GPL is variable depending on system, try everything and settle on what looks best (for example, on my Win7 system, color was best in D3D, but OSDs were in black boxes; in OGL the OSDs were just text on screen, but shadows on the track were purple).

The main issue is why all three installs throw that "incorrectly installed" popup. The two GTP installs run fine once I OK that popup. The default install will close when I OK that popup unless I immediately click any menu option on the main screen; then responds very slowly throughout the menus (even though Fraps shows over 300fps). But once in a car on a track all three run normally (depending on track and number of cars, fps is 120-320).

AFAIK, FRAPS hasn't been developed or updated since Late February 2013, which renders it's compatibility with modern versions (8.1/10/11) of Windows quite dubious. As for that "Incorrectly Installed" error, you should try the now-current v1.2.0.1 No-CD for Windows 10 & 11 on all of your installs, apply the 4 GB (aka Large Address Aware) Patch and set compatibility to Windows XP-Service Pack 2/3 with administrative privileges on all of them.

*Also, disabling some in-game settings such as "Vertical Synchronization" and "Frame Limiting" can make a world of difference in terms of overall stability.
*Assuming that you've installed said game thorough physical or emulated media, it's always a good idea to either reapply the v1.2.0.1 update and it's corresponding No-CD/No-DVD/No-DRM or reinstall it altogether -as to ensure good file integrity-; Most often, it's the former step that works the best, specially on the main insallation folder.
(Apparently there's a digital release of said game that was available "once upon a time" thorough Steam & GoG....which, for the time being, remains as an absolute oxymoron.)

Our cool friend TheBenCrazy has prepped an in-depth guide for said game. #500%Recommneded

Yes, Fraps is "old", but so is N2k3; once on the track the default N2k3 fps counter and fraps agree within a couple of digits.

I've seen numerous new exe files the past few years (I assume Kaemmer dropped his ban on them), but without knowing who created them, or what is different from default, I've been leery of using them.

Always use XP compat, always run as admin (which seems useless in W11, UAC still pesters you ...I'm on the verge of disabling it). Never use VSync, better to limit fps to 60 in the vid drivers; and it's usually better to use any vid options in the driver settings than in a game.

I've not "installed" N2k3 in years; as far as I know it makes no registry entries so have just copied the entire sim(s) from system to system; in the current case I just pulled the secondary drive from the old system and hooked it up in the new. I do know my copy works in W10, copied the entire thing to a flashdrive for a friend a couple of years ago and it ran fine on his W10 system.

Am familiar with the BenCrazy site, in fact I tried that before coming here. Had to twist the arm of W11 just to get the installation to run, then got popups about something in W11 "blocking the app" when I clicked the shortcut, more tweaking. Finally got the menu screen to appear but when I selected anything it dumped me back to the desktop; don't know if the game crashed or the OS shut it down, result is the same. And this was just the base game, without all the extra stuff in my copy.

This is most perplexing, N2k3 has previously never given any trouble at all no matter what OS.

It sounds like either User Account Control or Data Execution Prevention right there. It could be permanently disabled thorough an elevated command prompt on previous versions of Windows. but not on them latest ones as those will require the final user to disable Secure Boot thorough the MoBo's BIOS beforehand.

-Yup. #MicroSlop being #MicroSlop alright....

As for those "banned" .exes, those definitely were created, at first, to break the Disc Check Systems of the time, but it gradually switched to modifying them to accomodate different sets of physics, depending on which series expansion you had installed ATM, either GTP (Sports Prtototypes), OWR (Champcar/IndyCar/Formula 1) or CTS (NASCAR Trucks), for example. There was a major court case on that subject which the developers ultimately won. Look up for Redline Developments v/s iRacing. is a pretty interesing read....

I know DEP had to be disabled in Vista and Win7 to run the GTP mod, but can't see where it's blocked anything in Win11 (so far). In the two GTP installs, once I OK that incomplete install nonsense, everything is fine, I've run several cars at different tracks with no problems, even ran a few laps of a race with 24 opponents (which means "incomplete install" is ridiculous).

FWIW, I was a beta tester for Sierra through the GPL era, before Vivendi bought them. There was a sequel to N2k3 in the works, better physics, tire models, etc.; but Vivendi wanted it "dumbed down" to appeal to a wider market, Kaemmer balked (his reputation had been built on better and better sims since the early "Indianapolis 500: the Simulation", arguably the first true sim); he left, got backing, and bought the rights to the N2k3 core programming, which became the basis of iracing. Naturally anyone editing the N2k3 physics could easily create something in direct competition to his plans, so they were banned
(the NoCD exes were no problem, Kaemmer didn't care about them, the CD check was a Sierra decision, like most games on CD then). What disturbed most people was not the ban but his aggressive, mean spirited, attitude towards a large community which had supported him, even revered him, through a series of some of the best sims ever. The GTP mod was allowed to continue because it was so far along in development and because its creators contacted Kaemmer and got his input on the final design (redesign the loader and suggestions for setup options and handling tweaks). All other mods were dead in the water, and the people walked away from N2k3 entirely; legally now about all you could do was make tracks, sounds, and liveries. There were some interesting mods in the works; I worked with a group on a "vintage" NASCAR mod - the early days, late forties, ten year old "jalopies" with hot-rodded flathead V8s running mostly on dirt tracks; the strangest was a speedboat mod, "tracks" marked by buoys on lakes (have the remains of both on DVD buried somewhere ...if they are still readable). There were at least four open wheel mods; two were converted to PTA physics and released, one had the F1 style physics about halfway done but was barely driveable, the last had absolutely gorgeous graphics but still running on cup physics and no paint kit. The OWBeta is the one I converted from PTA to GTP, with two carsets - '78 F1 and '88 CART (I'm astounded it still gets one or two downloads a month).

But these issues in W11 have me perplexed, if they didn't run at all - ctd when loading or when going to track - it would make more sense. I appreciate all the input and remain open to ideas.

Andretti stalks Pironi at Clermont, not too shabby for a twenty year old sim -
