OG Castle Wolfenstein was released on DOS in 1984, set in first half of 1940s sometime, not sure if there's an exact year. Anyway, were just past or the date for that and other 80s WWII settings, and the Wolf3D sequel will have that date come soon.

However, there were some gulf war settings that came out so soon after last shots were fired that this time came and went before the end of the 20th century.

the still popular "back to the future" depicts a journey back in time 30 years, but the film is now voer 40 years old. watching it is a bigger jump than the film takes!

there are many things now further in the past than intuitively seems the case

reading this thread again it seems

-we can only talk the same topics so many times
-discussion moved onto other platforms (esp from younger folk)
-some may have gone to llms even
-less total people interested now
-less total availability of the hardware that associated with vintage scene
-some of our regular long term members, active in recent years, have now stopped posting 🙁

I’ve recently noticed some subtle changes in the forum. It’s not just slowing down, it's now taken over, and not for the better. Until yesterday I never believed, that there could be anything worse than @DosFreak’s moderation. And I was wrong, because the things can always take a turn for much worse. Now I kinda miss @DosFreak as a moderator 😀 At least he was editing posts by adding some "reason", and not deleting everything, which he personally doesn't like, without a trace.

Lets not derail this thread, I don't want one of the few threads I'm active in to get nixxed by the mods.

It all starts feeling the same with time. Mundane, boring. I feel like I've already seen everything that was there to see.

Having been around various folks (sometimes silently) here over multiple forums since 1998…

Before the 2008 era the moderation was extremely draconian far beyond anything you have experienced recently ,
I don’t remember exactly what minor thing was done by myself because of how rarely I visited this site back then but I couldn’t get back into my old 2006 era account for likely a moderation reason.

After a long absence when I came back it appeared moderation was higher than other typical forums in some ways that were perplexing around naive/OT questions getting answers . That form of moderation appears to have backed off somewhat and when it occurs it at least makes sense.
The more recent moderation techniques (last 5 years) that to the outside user looked less precent and more open in my mind was actually due to a lot more effort on the moderator team dealing with folks with possible mental health issues/other in very tactful ways.

I may be wrong but what you are noticing may actually be due to less moderation / fewer available moderator hours and not over moderation.

I run foul and have caused past issues and have always been dealt with fairly.

This forum has always been a benevolent dictatorship that could and has removed off topic material at their pleasure , if you have specific concerns try to engage the mods, considering the world we find ourselves in and the high tensions it is understandable if the mods don’t have the time to engage with our meltdowns or off topic nonsense.
