So i have been reading threads on vogons and searching through ebay looking for a sound card. I mostly want to play old dos and windows games, especially all those old cheesy FMV games like 7th guest and Return to Zork. I also need the card to work well with 98 and multi media stuff. I dont care about SS or EAX/3D extensions, i will be using a 2 or 2.1 speaker set up. I prefer FM synth over wavetable.
So it sounds like a sb16 should fit the bill right? Well the thing is I only have one ISA slot, and i would like to keep it open for DIY Hardware experiments. Ive also seen that there may be some kind of speed issues with ISA sound and w98? So is there a PCI card out there that does good sb16 emulation for dos games? I was looking at an sb live/audigy, but apparently the sb emulation is pretty bad?
If i end up going ISA is a picogus a better option? Looking at most of the sb16 cards on ebay, they dont have opl3 chips.. and im not paying 200+ for a sb16 pro 2!
