Yes i remember it well - from console (NES, SMS) to various 8 bit like atari 800, cdr 64, the euro machines like spectrum and amstrad and the msx machines. The scene was centred on some sites but also within others, i remember allegro library sites with showcased remake games.

maybe it faded when that era of games moved into a more "distant" past, or it moved more into mobile - you remember all the .exes and so on? 😀 that doesnt happen much now in comparison with mobile, browser and so on

also, many remakes were done - and once done, is a new remake a re-remake?

there's also the whole unity and other advanced game tools where the ideas of that past - write a game engine, use a graphics lib, rip or create some graphics and slowly build a game full of subtle bugs and fun memories - have faded in favor of rapid dev 3d engines where its all done with visuals, load this model, load that, create even scripts, do some other stuff and suddenly its a full blown FPS

finally, that era coincided with rapidly advancing emulation tools - but now, and in the last 10 years, there are emulate-anything apps and access to "all of them" libraries of games, maybe that saps the demand too, or at least the motivation to write a game remake

Archon Classic (2010) gosh 16 years old now - getting towards that 20 years ago mark itself, I THINK you can set it to full original mode but the new 'conquest' mode features very familiar Archon gameplay anyway

I remember this website. I played few remakes which were mentioned out there: Classic version of Football Manager and Nether Earth. You're right there is no central place with multiple devs doing their own remakes of old games but it doesn't mean that nobody makes them anymore. I'm sure there are some projects to be found on github, itch.io, archive.org and few active forums. I would love to see remakes from 8-bit era and early DOS just to make some games more accessible in 2026 without emulators.
