VOGONS

Hello,
I am currently repairing a heavily damaged Voodoo 2 card (ST-6630). It has been quite a journey, but - after replacing traces, reflowing, resoldering and headscratching - I am getting somewhere. Now the Voodoo passes all the tests in Witchery up until the memory check. The "front" chips on the card mostly work (all of them except U6), but the rest doesn't. To a point witchery even suggest they are not soldered. 😁 I rechecked all the address and data connections (and control signals) with a multimeter for a direct or indirect connection to FBI. All of those check out OK including the resistor arrays.

However I noticed Witchery tells me the expect strap configuration is not quite what it should be. In witchery it shows the R52 as missing while the card has it soldered on (as it should). I noticed that while one side is connected to the +5V rail the other seems to not connect anywhere. I am expecting the via got broken by corrosion (wouldn't be the first one on this trainwreck of a card 😀 ) and thus the connection is missing.

Could somebody please measure their Voodoo 2 and tell me where my connection should go? Does anybody have an experience with similar type of a fault (ram not working despite the connections being there).

Thank you so much for any help. 😀

Thank you! That helped a lot. After connecting a few broken vias and traces, replacing a few rams, etc. Now the Voodoo passes the whole witchery test.

HOWEVER it still shows dead TMUs and no FBI RAM in Mojo. Task manager shows Voodoo 2 driver working correctly, but display menu locks up when trying to start it.

Is there somebody more experienced with the architecture of these cards that can tell me why Witchery passes all the tests (including communication between FBI and TMU 0) yet mojo doesn't even recognise the FBI ram? It shows it as 0 MB

Glad it helped.

Mojo is pretty useless as a diagnostics, as it will show things like 0 FBI RAM even if the FBI RAM is OK but the issue is TMU related.

If witchery passes all tests, you should look into the TMU0/1 RAM (current witchery does not support TMU RAM testing).

I think there was another tool that supported TMU RAM testing, it was mentioned on this forum before.

Edit: it's mentioned here Re: Voodoo2 diagnostics software (Witchery)
