The point it claims, is so you can come back to the captured RF (Humungous file) when tools are better in a few years time, that implies that they are only good enough to show potential at the minute. That means for it to be worth the bother, you want to preserve max info and store the RF and the approx quarter terabyte a tape is after Flac by my reading.

Also the intermediate steps to Media Player playability, make huge files, it is sounding like you need just over terabyte of room to handle a 2hr tape. 100MB a second is max cited for the uncompressed full frame AV.

Then conversion speeds, rf capture at real time of tape play, then sampling of RF capture takes minimum ten times play length, then conversion to AV on a high end ryzen 9 takes double to four times play length, then if you are lucky you can convert it to a consumable format at about double speed. So 2 hours of tape play, 20 hours RF sampling, 8 hours AV convert, 1 hour format conversion. 31 hours per tape.

Not all of that is hands on time, you can automate it, but it's all you've got a machine doing for a day and a half, just for one tape. You would probably want to do multiple rf captures in one day though, which puts you at needing 2TB RF capture space, that you have to mirror to the RF sampling machine because you don't want it thrashing the same disk. then that needs 1TB to work with, then you need another big data bucket for the AV conversion, and finally you get something that's VideoCD to DVD sized depending on what final format you want it in. Anyway, lot of "in flight" storage even if you end up with a small file at the end... but does it look the same by now as something captured with a decent card with frame synch and stabilisation? The Canopus he's saying does 75% is well known to chuck out half the color info at the DAC, then it is also compressing down to a bitrate for the firewire. So basically we know that anything that doesn't do that is wayyy better.

Anyway, when consumable and conveniently stored format is the objective, is the 99% correct version really gonna be worth 10-15 times the time vs a 90% version when all the visible advantage is likely to disappear in the format conversion?

Yeah, it doesn't sound like a fast or convenient process no matter how easy they say it is to get started.

Still, I don't think the final FLAC compressed RF files are that large. There is a chart at the bottom of this page that says a 120 minute recording is around 39GB using FLAC compression:

It suggests using the compressed RF files for archival purposes since that still allows flexibility for higher quality conversion in the future if technology improves. So, I don't think there is any reason to keep the full size uncompressed files.

I am not saying this is what I or anyone else should be doing to convert whatever VHS tapes they have around. I haven't done it myself, so the process could be even worse and even less practical than it sounds on paper. It just seems like another option that uses more of a no-compromises approach for maximum archival quality.

I definitely don't need anything like that for my old home movies. I just haven't found any practical or affordable high quality options yet because every time someone discovers a method it eventually ends up on youtube and the value of the devices to do it go through the roof.

biggest selling points of vhs-decode are
- bypassing as many analog stages as possible when capturing signal
- full control over deinterlacing instead of getting compressed video out of a black box
- software TBC (Time Base Corrector)

First one you might not even notice with the quality of VHS, second one depends on what capture setup you have as some do it properly, third is crucial in case of degraded tapes.
Keeping original because some magical new implementation might roll out in the future is plain FOMO.

Converting videos to digital format was a fairly long/slow road for me.

At first I tried an analog video capture device with varying results, the one I had picked seemed unreliable and at that time my systems probably weren't really fast enough for the job.

Then... at a local video shop I was the right number customer to walk in the door and won a DVD recorder - not the "computer" kind, this looked like a regular DVD video player (albeit on the larger side) but it could record live video to DVD-Rs - over the next few years I converted my video tapes (VHS and Beta) to DVDs.

Sometime after that, I "ripped" many of my DVDs to digital files so that I could put them on a PLEX server.

I've played with some other devices/methods:

I picked up the "Digital Video Converter" stand-alone box shown, it creates ASF (MPEG-4) files - I found one of the trickiest things in the video conversion process is finding good ways to convert the various formats to the ones you want to use.

More recently picked up the little HDMI video capture device. I've not played with it much yet, it (or course) came just in a bag with no information or software ... (if anyone recognizes it and can offer more information ... please!)

I don't know much about the top one but the bottom one I've seen a lot of. They are basically known as "Camlink clones" which is designed mostly for use with people wanting to use cameras with HDMI out into their PC (better quality than webcam), however they make good capturing devices for just about anything. They don't usually have any scaling ability so what you feed in you get out (example: 1280x720 in 1280x720 out etc.) can't upscale it to 1920x1080 etc. but this isn't really an issue sometimes it's better/easier to just do that in software.

Most of them are MJPEG but some of them can do YUY2.

Good to know.. Do you know what "drivers" it might need? Of have suggestions on decent capture software.

This was just something I saw on Temu and thought it might be fun to play with - but I've not really done anything with it.

I'm not surprised people don't know the first one - it's quite "retro" (but I didn't buy it "today" - I got it "new" - copyright notice on the box says "2009" and recommended OS is XP of Vista)!

Usually they don't need a driver and it just uses DirectShow decode (and whatever the Linux default decoder is). For capturing, OBS is usually the easiest/most straight forward, just add it as a Video Capture Device and adjust stuff like brightness, contrast etc.

This thing has been sitting on the corner of my desk for close to a year, I'd all but forgotten about it till I saw this thread (for some reason - with the company closed, kids grown up and moved out etc., and most "new" sources of video being already in digital files - I've not felt an "urgent"need to convert video lately - but I do want to "play" with i)

I found this for sale locally and just couldn't pass on an undamaged and complete midi AT. It's a completely uninteresting Pentium 133MHz/16MB RAM/S3 Trio64V+/Opti 82C931 from 1996, but it's all original with stickers intact etc. which makes it a perfectly preserved specimen of the era.

The attachment front.jpg is no longer available

Altec (nothing to do with Altec Lansing) was a Greek system integrator from 1986 until its collapse in 2008. At some point it was a huge player into software, retail stores, public sector, stock market and telecoms. This PC was sold right before Altec started taking the super cheap and low quality route (like most similar OEMs did around the turn of the millennium), still with a sturdy case and good PSU.

Motherboard is PcPartner/VTech (35-8230-01 being the PCPartner code and 702734B the VTech code), but I couldn't find any reference of it anywhere. It's entirely possible this was an OEM-only model, I know it's something PCParner did and the size of Altec could justify it back then. It's a good thing everything is silkscreened because it really has a shitton of jumpers and configuration options and I'm not very optimistic about finding a manual. I'll just wait a bit before submitting it to theretroweb in case I missed something in my research and it exists under a different name or model.

Some oddities worth mentioning
-It uses UM8886BF, what I though to be a 486 chipset
-First time I see this kind of floppy drive cable, floppy controller position is in the middle, 3.5" as A and 5.25" as B on the sides!
-A very uncommon, for me at least, Phoenix BIOS version (how to backup this without a programmer?)
-A Dallas RTC, but without an integrated battery thankfully
-Since there has been at least one question about the drive rails, I also include photos showing what they look like. They were very common in Greece, this case family was everywhere

Yes that is an odd one. There are some on this page, a Chaintech, Gigabyte and two Pine models that are very similar in layout, but not identical, https://theretroweb.com/motherboards?itemsPer … etIds%5B%5D=469
So it could be a revision of one of those... or not.

It would be great if you get it going to match CPU speed with chipset benchmarks that mpe and other members have done, to see if this was a neglected gem or just an "also ran".

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

It would be interesting to compare this one to a 9600XT.

Today I lucked into an old HDD on the flea market. Visually it looked decent, particularly PCB on the back side. Quick shake check, no sounds. Gave 2$ for it, and once I got home, the test said perfect disk health... normal sounds, normal temperatures.

It's an ATA 33 drive, with 2.0 GB capacity running on 4500rpm. I think it will be perfect for my Win95, Pentium MMX 200 build.

Can you try BIOSDUMP?
