I'm in the process of turning one of my bedrooms into a dedicated computer room. Previously I had most of my computer set ups in my living room, but I think it makes more sense to redo the setups in a dedicated room.
The current plan is:
- 5 total workstations (modern gaming system, plus 4 retro systems)
- desk space to comfortably house computers and additional peripherals / media (minimize clutter)
- storage for additional systems, peripherals, and games
- dedicated bench space for working on systems
- display shelves for game and hardware boxes
The room is approximately 15 x 9 feet (4.6m x 2.8m). There are two closets which I am converting for storage / workspace.
For furniture I am planning two L-shaped desks. I had previously built one of them which I'm already using in the room with my main gaming computer and retro XP system.
The second L-desk will be for 3 additional systems with dedicated CRT monitors.
I do have an 8 foot butcher block IKEA countertop I was previously using a table for my prior retro setup. While it has a lot of horizontal space, it only has a depth of ~25 5/8" (65cm). For desktop systems with CRT monitors this doesn't provide a lot of usable desk space. Ideally I probably want a desk at least 28 to 30" deep.
My other desk (pictured above) has a depth of 27". If I want to maintain symmetry I could make a new desk 27" deep. This would be an extra 1 3/8" deeper than the countertop I was using, which helps. But I think in the long run 28 to 30" is probably better.
For the closets, I have already converted one of them into dedicated storage with built-in shelving. I do need to add some horizontal bracing to prevent the current shelves from sagging, so that's on the to-do list.
For the second closet, I am thinking a combination of storage and a dedicated standing work bench. While I do have a dedicated electronics workbench in my basement, I think having a workspace in the computer room will be useful for quick tinkering or troubleshooting of systems.
I was also considering turning the second closet into a media space for console gaming and/or stereo equipment. Though this would involve adding an additional electrical outlet since there is no easy power source in it.
For the left hand wall, I plan to put dedicates shelving for game boxes. I can fit 3 shelves x 5.5feet each which provides space for most of my game box collection. For the main wall, I am thinking a series of floating shelves for display boxes including retro hardware boxes.
For anyone who has set up a dedicated retro computer room, any advice on things? Is there anything you would have done differently? Anything I might be missing or haven't considered?
