Same happens after patching to 1.4, putting dgVoodoo2 files in the dir, putting in an older dsound.dll, and setting compatibility modes for the exe file. My PC is an i5 3rd gen, and this happens with both a GeForce 960 & the internal Intel HD graphics.
Does anyone have a solution for this? I want to play the original game only. The 1.5 patch and 98Redux versions made the enemy AI too aggressive and not fun anymore.

Use the unoffical 1.5 patch. This is the only solution. As it never ran under windows 7 otherwise.
Also you can adjust the difficulty level.
Or run 98se or XP.

It got past that instant crash, but then pops up a new error saying not enough memory. This was also easily fixed by setting compatibility to XP SP3. Then I was in the game menu screens. The game crashed to desktop when trying to enter any mission. The next time I tried to start it, it reported that the game hadn't shut down properly. This allowed me to choose software mode in a small selection box. Now I could enter missions! The colors were weird, so I went to the desktop and left the Windows 'screen resolution' menu open and went back into the game (this fixes the issue with 256 color games). The game ALMOST looks fine now (the tank bullets show a flat purple spot in the cockpit view). The speed is too fast and this was also fixed by leaving Bandicam running with a 60fps limit. I'll need to test it further. I tried several dgvoodoo2 files in the folder but none could get the hardware mode working. Thanks very much! How did you get the idea to rename the exe??

As for 1.5, IIRC the difficulty changes nothing noticable. The enemy is so aggressive that the first mission you have to group your weapons (cannon & machine gun) to destroy that first Russian scout that's dead-set on attacking your scavanger now. In the original game, the scout would retreat and then shift its focus onto you once you attacked it.
