Yes, try "user" modes instead of auto, and choose LBA mode.
It was also necessary to disable UDMA modes for that IDE channel on some of my motherboards/BIOS.
I tried, but I forgot that I was using an add-in card for my IDE ports that's much faster that the onboard ones.
The card's detection process is automatic, and doesn't have a prompt to configure things manually.
What card are you using? Most have some way to configure them because this was often necessary back in the IDE days.
To be honest though, it may be worth it to just switch to the onboard IDE controller\ports. In my experience a CF card even limited to ATA-33 is ridiculously fast for most Windows 9x systems. The latency is obviously several orders of magnitude faster than a hard drive of the time, and hard drives in the late 90s were generally quite far from maxing out the 33MB\sec limit of the interface.... where as a decent CF card most likely will.
The result is that most files and applications that need to be loaded are relatively tiny compared to the transfer rate of the drive and there is effectively no delay, so things happen pretty much instantaneously. The CPU\RAM and software itself will probably be more of a limitation with regard to game load times.
If your board is a bit newer and has ATA-66 or ATA-100, then there is even less to be gained by using an ATA-133 card.
If it's a much older board without DMA mode and you have to use the drives in PIO mode... then yeah, it's probably worth using a faster IDE interface card. Still, if it is causing issues, there should be a way to configure the card. If not, you may want to try a different one.
