Here's what I had to do.
It is possible to commit no errors and still lose. That is not a weakness, that is life.

The bug described in this thread affects Windows 98 (not applicable in your case, since you used Windows XP).
2 x PLCC-68 / 4 x PGA132 / 5 x Skt 3 / 1 x Skt 4 / 9 x Skt 7 / 12 x SS7 / 1 x Skt 8 / 21 x Slot 1 / 8 x Slot A
5 x Skt 370 / 8 x Skt A / 2 x Skt 478 / 2 x Skt 754 / 3 x Skt 939 / 7 x LGA775 / 1 x LGA1155
Current PC: Ryzen 7 9800X3D

My previous challenge in this thread stands. Thus far, no one has been able to provide any empiricism in that the massive performance advantage of a PCIe video subsystem can't make up for the lack AGP texture acceleration.
I'll be glad if someone can prove otherwise.

We already know that PCI Express is king on Windows 98 (I have one such system running a Core 2 Duo E8600 and a Radeon X850XT PE and saying that it's fast would be a major understatement).
Still, not really relevant for the VIA AGP bug itself, is it? Or maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean.

I plan on giving it a shot over the next few days I'll get back to you if I get anywhere.

I agree, the only GPUs better in AGP than PCI-E are GeForce FX cards.
So my motherboard doesn't seem to have this issue.
Asus A8v-MX.
VIA K8M800
I have win98 se running with ATI x800 pro. 3dmark tests running smoothly.
