Hi everyone,
I'm currently trying to repair a Roland SC-88 Pro with a hardware issue and I'm hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction.

The problem:
· The unit receives MIDI data and appears to play, but the audio output is just crackling/scratching noise.
· The noise also occurs when pressing the front panel buttons (e.g., VOLUME/PREVIEW), so it seems to be an analog audio stage or power supply issue rather than a digital/MIDI reception problem.

I've opened it up and I'm focusing on the power supply and audio board.

What I'm looking for:
· A service manual or schematic diagram for the SC-88 Pro would be extremely helpful for tracing the power rails and audio path, and for identifying the correct capacitor values and positions.
· If anyone has a PDF copy or knows a reliable source where I can find one, I would be very grateful.

Any troubleshooting tips from those who have dealt with similar noise issues on these old Roland units are also more than welcome!

For troubleshooting, did you make sure that the transformer is correctly wired for your region? If yours is imported from Japan like mine the internal transformer needs to be rewired from the 100V used in Japan.

Thank you so much for the link – that's exactly what I needed. I've downloaded the service manual and the schematics are clear enough to start tracing the power rails and audio path.

First of all, thanks again to those who helped with the service manual link – it's been very useful.
I'm currently troubleshooting my Roland SC-88 Pro, now I've hit a wall. I managed to get into the test mode and ran the Memory Test – unfortunately, it came back as NG.
What I'm trying to figure out:
· Could the Memory Test NG be a direct consequence of the power supply issues (ripple, unstable voltage) rather than a dead RAM chip?
· Or is it more likely that the RAM chip itself has failed and needs replacement?
My current plan:
1. Recap the power supply board first (replace all suspect electrolytic caps and clean up the old glue).
2. Check for corrosion or bad solder joints around the RAM chips on the main board.
3. Retest and see if the Memory Test passes.

Before I dive in, I'd really appreciate any advice from those who have dealt with similar issues on these old Roland units. Specifically:
· Has anyone seen Memory Test NG clear up after a recap?
· Are there any common points of failure (e.g., specific capacitors, voltage rails, or RAM chip types) I should pay extra attention to?
Now I have the service manual and schematics, so I can trace things if needed. Just looking for some real-world experience to guide my next steps.

Hi everyone,
Quick update – I spent some time going through the service manual more carefully, and I think I've finally pinned down the root cause.
When I run the Memory Test in diagnostic mode, the "C" indicator on the front panel flashes. According to the service manual, this points to a Wave ROM checksum error – specifically, IC22 on the main board is failing the verification.
This makes perfect sense given the symptoms: crackling audio output (garbage data being read from the waveform ROM), and the Memory Test coming back as NG.
I've located the chip on the board and noted the markings:
· Roland P/N: RO1124778
· Part No.: D23C32000-519

From what I can tell, this appears to be a mask ROM, which means I can't simply reflash it with a standard programmer.
My questions now are:
1. Before I source a replacement, is there anything else I should check? Could a bad solder joint, broken trace, or power supply issue cause the checksum to fail? Or is it almost certainly the chip itself?
2. For replacement options – is my best bet to search for a used pull (e.g., "Roland RO1124778" or "SC-88 PRO Wave ROM") on eBay or similar? Or is there a known-compatible EPROM substitute (e.g., 27C040) that I can program with a dumped ROM image, assuming I can find one?
3. If I go with a used pull, is it a straight swap, or does anything need to be recalibrated afterward?
I'm comfortable with soldering and basic board work – just need a bit of guidance before I commit to a course of action.

Not sure about the SC-88 Pro, but at least on the regular SC-88 the SMD electrolytic capacitors on the main board are a known point of failure and should always be replaced. In many cases their leakage corrodes traces, which can cause problems like the one your experiencing.

Could you attach a picture of the board with a close up on the caps?

There is slight corrosion near the battery (CR2032) of the PCB

I measured the power supply voltage, and both +-12V and 5V are normal

3. Is there any corrosion or breakage in the circuitry?

If you confirm there are no issues there, I would focus my attention on the SRAM or DRAM chips—specifically IC17, IC18, IC30, IC31, and IC32 (especially the SRAM). I once repaired two SC-55 units that played MIDI with the correct tempo, but the instrument sounds and pitches were completely garbled; after a long period of troubleshooting, I finally replaced the SRAM chips, and everything returned to normal.

It is easy to find replacements with identical specifications for these SRAM and DRAM chips, and the replacement process is straightforward if you have a hot air gun—so it might be worth giving that a try.

DRAM and SRAM do not store data permanently, nor do they require programming; these types of chips are essentially the same as the system memory and cache chips found on computer motherboards.

As for the Wave ROMs, I assigned them a lower priority because—being mask ROMs—they typically have very low failure rates.

In the case of the SC-55 I mentioned earlier, the onboard SRM2A256SLM10 chips were faulty; these were 100ns chips, and the unit functioned correctly after I replaced them with 70ns SRM2A256SLM70 chips.

The reason I considered replacing the SRAM was that I had already exhausted all other options—including transferring all the Roland ICs and Wave ROM chips from a fully functional SC-55, which still didn't solve the problem. Replacing the SRAM was the last resort, and fortunately, it resolved the issue.
