My story is quite simmilar. Phil got me into this hobby and whenever I want to upgrade something in my retro PC, I watch his videos first. And just like you guys I've been wondering what happened to him lately.

As a side note... He seems like a genuinely nice bloke, so I was shocked to learn that he stopped posting here because apparently he was bullied? What the hell?

haha you reckon its women related?

More broadly family related most likely. Unless you have this hobby developed to the point, where you can actually live off it (the couple larger YouTube channels, some guys who are actually making new things from old stock and maybe a couple others), you generally just don't have time to seriously pursue it anymore between your regular job, family obligations and perhaps some other interests as well. A shame though...one of my favourite too.

I wouldn't call it bullied, but it certainly wasn't very supportive of his efforts. He hasn't posted since this happened, and that makes me sad:

It needs to be said but this place can be very cliquey at times and there used to be some here who had less tact than is needed to have a gentile conversation and will disagree simply for the sake of it.

It has at times made me simply not bother posting here for weeks at a time, now though I just block those people, they can all go sit in their own echo chamber circle jerking each other like its a Sub Reddit.

Still the least out of any communities I've ever been a part of (if you're just now raising an eyebrow at my registration date, know that I had not only forgotten the password, but the previous username as well and only re-registered yesterday to hopefully get a pressing question answered - and I already did!). Everywhere else the proportion of douchebags is generally (much) higher! (I'm talking general forums here, not specifically (retro)computer ones)

Agreed. This is the most collaborative and generous forum I have ever come across. That is why I was surprised to see the hostile reaction to Phil's post. It seemed very out of the norm for this forum

Given how the scalpers are these days, I am saddened to see 'museum pieces' sold this way.

Our society does not value 'contemporary artifacts', even though the rapid pace of obsolecense of these devices means many historically relavent devices may only exist as pictures at this point.

The importance of well preserved private collections in the face of that should be immediate and clear, but sadly is not.

You can easily count the number of bonafide computing museums, and their difficulties staying in operation are well documented, due to this lack of consideration.

I hope the pieces went to good conservators.

How exactly does a private collection help society though? At least Phil's collection was put to good use for producing educational and informative content that will now hopefully be around forever. Many private collectors hoard far more than they need and do nothing with it (or at least they don't publish their findings). Which effectively is a waste of their potential, and also drives up the prices for those that do want to use these items.

Whilst my collection is nothing compared to Phil's, there is certainly more there than I can use day-to-day. For the most part, I only have one of each type of thing though (Unless I plan to SLI it).

I do have the desire to start publishing stuff on my YouTube channel but there is little point in doing that until I am in a place where I can post consistently, and with quality content. Because the algorithm will simply not show it to people.

Mainly, it's about them being 'well kept', and safe, while society at large comes to appreciate the value of 'things that were', or 'which shaped the world for awhile.'

That only needs to happen for about 50 to 60 years, generally.

For a poignant example, consider how the BBC did not respect or care about old Doctor Who episodes, with a great many studio original reels rotting from improper storage, or even having the media bulk-erased, and overwritten 'for cost savings'.

see vintage reporting about it here.

https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/doctor-w … -lost-episodes/

In the intervening years, PRIVATE COLLECTORS have supplied the missing episodes, with nearly the entire series now being properly preserved.

They were the ONLY surviving copies, because society at large did not properly value the cultural contribution the series had made, until it was much too late.

Computing tech has an even worse obstacle; the creators of tech devices and software *want* the old items destroyed (so that people HAVE to buy new. It's literally called 'product lifecycle management'.) In the face of such active destruction, the only bullwark is private collection.

By the time 70 years rolls around, and people understand the value of an early model Altair, only a handfull in the whole world will remain in existence. Rarer still, are complete kits with documentation, fit for museum curation.

Since we DONT value contemporary artifacts, DONT fund professional preservation and curation (because we dont value contemporary artifacts), we LOSE those artifacts, if not for 'weirdos and hoarders' who keep them safe and well conserved.

The value of good, independent conservators in the face of this, cannot be understated.

Cant help but think he sold out in the later years once he got popular.
There were a few product placement videos in there.
Related products yes but product placement never the less.

Re: GeForce2 vs GeForce3: My test results

This post/thread is really old. And I don't really blame the ones that said the comparison wasn't good as it really wasn't. He didn't specify what cards were tested at first and only told it after people asked him. I guess he learned his lesson and made better tests later - I for one never watch videos of retro stuff.

Visit my AmiBay items for sale (updated: 2026-03-23). I also take requests 😉

Maybe so, but the responses were not pointing this out in a kind manner. Everyone has to start somewhere, and will make mistakes along the way.

Anyhow, he clearly learned. His videos are excellent.

Communication is a powerful beast... there are multiple ways of saying the same thing, but with a completely different impact.
The comparison being "good" or not wasn't even the problem in that thread, it's the way the opinion was expressed that clearly felt a bit aggressive IMHO (even if unintentional). Maybe Phil was already bothered by other situations and that was just the last straw.

Phil taught me that building a windows 98 PC out of a Pentium 4 and Radeon 9600 instead of a Tualatin and Voodoo 5 was nothing to be ashamed of. I've had a lot of fun playing games on this boring PC.
I'll miss Phil, hope he finds joy in his next chapter of life.

Yeah, I think that was his niche. He gave cheaper options for building your retro rig. He said many times in his videos that he received backlash for suggesting these newer platforms over period correct ones.

I can understand how purists wouldn't see the value in that. But, if you just want to replay the games you are interested in, rather than being interested in the hardware, it's the sensible choice.

The other reason to do so, of course, is that you will get better performance than period correct hardware can manage. With modern gaming we have all become accustomed to 60+ FPS. The low framerates and stutters that we accepted as normal back in the day, is quite a hard pill to swallow for most people now.

Lastly, regardless of what the actual hardware is, it can still be a fun and rewarding project to plan what you want, source the parts, build it, and then have the satisfaction of a working machine at the end. Phil's guides made a positive outcome far more likely than if you had to find your own way.

Yes, Funnily enough a certain serpent who seems to revel in being a contrarian and generally argumentative with zero tact for it was involved there too ..and I have them blocked for similar reasons, I have little time for people who come off as being nothing but argumentative.

He got a free portable 4k 19” LCD, very expensive piece considering most portable screens are sub $100 things.

It seems to be pretty common to product placement to make ends meet but getting free kit isn’t really selling out.

I’ve been very disappointed that small 4k screens 21-24” no longer exist but I’m not spending almost $500 for a portable or $1200 for an obsolete tech 4k standard 24”.
Even though these would actually fit my desk at home.

Should invite him back now that he is retired, just remind him not to worry about us cranks as there are only 3-4 of us.

Phil is a nice guy, responding to some of my inquisitive & evaluative comments on his YouTube. Years ago he proclaimed the virtues of having all kinds of Roland hardware. If he is parting with any of his, I happen to be on the market for replacing my LAPC-I so I can put its ISA slot to other uses.
