I have same board as you, i have lot of CF cards from 256mb to 32gb and 0 problems

Dropping into ROM BASIC sounds like a BIOS configuration problem rather than a hardware problem, but I will point out that CF depends on the specific card and is not the automatic painless option it's sometimes suggested to be ("IDE through a passive adapter"). Plucking certain IDE pins for better CF-IDE compatibility

I was recently convinced (by Eep386) to try one of those SD-IDE adapters that use the FC1307 chip. It works great. MWDMA2 even works with 430FX (had to use ide0=serialize on linux for concurrent CD-ROM accesses to not get dma errors, but I don't blame that on the SD-IDE), and UDMA works on VIA VPX and 430TX. You do have to use a good SD card though; the first one I used was terrible, then I got a 75mb write speed rated one from B&H Photo and it's working nicely.
