I've tried Audacity on the various windows versions to see what the latest is that works. Here's my results:

NT 4.0 : 1.0.0
98SE : 2.0.0
2000 : 2.0.6
XP: 2.2.2
Vista: 3.0.5
Windows 7: 3.7.9 (the latest of the Audacity 3 line)

They recently released ver 4, but like so many places they don't say what windows version it will run on. It will be offered to you on Win7-x86, but the installer won't download, giving an error. On win7-x64, it will download and install, but Audacity produces an error at start. So in other words, don't bother trying it on windows 7.

I installed on one windows 10 x64 machine and it worked.

haven't liked audacity v4 much doesn't feel the same as legacy.
i liked the windows XP versions more.

Audacity's been slop and surveillance so you're better off with Tenacity.

though the "for Windows" thing generally is a problem from higher up - the libraries being compiled for compilers complying with the microsoft core path gambit and that all trickles down into platform regressions that blindside developers. Something ironic about 'don't copy microsoft'/'defective by design' here...
