It's crazy. For decades nothing but waiting for any sign of life regarding development of SC-55 or Yamaha-related projects, and now, all of a sudden... they are literally sh***ing us with projects. Not that I'm complaining, far from it. But right now it's a bit hard to keep track of everything... xD How was that possible? The rise of AI?

Yes AI is used in a lot of these projects.

What makes these different is people are comparing against the real thing, so they are checking the AI's work.

Was the sound-carcass project, by Mame contributor superctr, mentioned here already?

scemu aka SoundCarcass
An emulator of the Roland Sound Canvas SC-55, SC-55mkII, SC-88, SC-88VL, SC-88Pro, SC-8850 and SC-8820 as a C library, with headless/TUI/GUI players and an audio plugin.

Created by superctr 2026.

Thanks to:

giulioz for reverse engineering the XP and LSP chips.
nukeykt for reverse engineering the GP (SC-55 sound chip)
kode54 for reverse engineering Sound Canvas VA and its synth engine which was used as a reference for the initial XP implementation.

Not yet, though I've spotted it today, too.
Did you try to build it?

No, I am in the middle of something else, not Midi related...

With the time left I mess around a little with my S-MU2000 Windows XP mod . Because it is easy, and to check how the Tarboh is improving "native-engine".

All the newer sound canvas code projects are really neat. But for my game music listening hobby the SC-55 remains the best fit anyways, compared to the other Roland models.

While I did and even managed to downshift SoundCarcass package requirements regarding GTK4.

The overall sound character reminds me that of 88EmuPlayer but not exactly: the author has been learning SCCore.dll (Tabula Sonora thing) and obviously took something from it.

The LCD looks more Rolandish due to yellow backlight, both GUI parts crafted nicely.

Not all known ROMs are supported (88Pro and 8850 have different ROM layouts comparing to giulio's), but as a bonus you will have SB-55 (yes, Sound Brush) panel for all modes.

32 channel MIDIs aren't supported by neither internal player nor through external ports; probably, there's a catch to properly run this mode.

The front panel buttons aren't bound to keyboard shortcuts so you can't invoke some device functions.

That is good to know. Thanks for the small preview/review.
The GUI looks very slick.
