Hi,
Sometime back, I was here posting about the many troubles I was having with a Pentium 3 Build I did from scratch. As a reminder, here is where that machine has been left off at, since the last time I used it, maybe over a year ago now? I honestly don't recall for sure:
Motherboard: Intel D815EEA
CPU: Intel Pentium 3 866MHz
RAM: 133mhz 256MB SDRAM (2x 128MB sticks from IBM, in the second and third slots)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 VCGFX522APB
Sound Card: Aureal AU8830 Vortex 2 BA88ST30A-01
Ethernet: Startech Gigabit PCI LAN Card, st1000bt32
Storage: CF2IDE and some SD2IDE thing. Also a Pioneer DVR-112DBK DVD writer, and a Gotek USB Floppy Emulator
Additional: Some small black USB card with an NEC chip that can work in Windows 98, and provide USB 2.0 Support
PSU: Corsair RM750e
The way I remember this computer, it was not having a good time. The NVIDIA card in particular had issues with erasing stuff like right click menu options if I didn't install it right, stability when exiting out of games like LEGO Rock Raiders was... bad, and the system would usually crash, and I suspect some of the RAM I had in the system (unsure about these current ones, might have been a pair in the past. probably going to run Memtest86+, if I can). All of this, in addition to Windows 98SE being a fickle beast, it was... not a great experience, and I'm looking to try and rectify this, and I'm looking for some help and advice on the matter, please.
For the install, I know I was doing the right thing by staying only at DirectX 7.0A. However, I was doing stuff like installing Internet Explorer 6 SP1, Windows Media Player 9 (and some security patches for it), installing Microsoft Office XP, and a bunch of updates and patches for that, installing whatever was available from Legacy Update, and all of the drivers and software for my hardware I have (if it matters, the names in my files are:
"SWGameEN.exe (Sidewinder Control Panel 3.something),
Realtek LAN Startech (Drivers for the Gigabit LAN Card, which I took from archive.org),
56-64-win9x-international-6832da4973cc8325704459.exe (What I believe was considered the best driver for the GEFX card),
moniter_driver_disk (contains some inf files and such for my CRT, the E773C)
iTouch 2.2 (Some driver disc for my Logitech Internet Navigator USB Keyboard)
Intellipoint 2.2X (I don't remember where I got this from, but it allowed my USB Intellimouse Optical to have scrolling)
Intel 815E Chipset Driver (unsure on the specific version. Probably just grabbed from RetroWeb)
Aureal Vortex 2 (some zip file with Aureal Vortex 2 9X drivers and demos. Probably from Phils Computer Lab?),
nusb36e.exe")
Other notable software I'd usually install include the following:
WinRAR
Total Commander
Vanbasco's Karaoke Player
Imgburn
Retrozilla
Real Player (realplayer-10-5-6-0-12-1698-RealPlayer10-5GOLD.exe)
Quicktime 6.5.2
Windows 98 Plus!
Java 5.0 (java50.exe)
Windows Installer (instmsi.exe)
Goldwave 4.26
Daemon Tools 3.47
Acrobat Reader 6.0.1
.NET Framework 2.0
ms_visual_cpp_2005_runtimes
ms_visual_cpp_60_nov2000_runtimes
HxD
Flash Player (9r289)
Now, is listing all of this necessary? There is a decent chance that probably not, but, considering how rough my last Windows 98 experience was, I am trying to list and provide as much info as I can, so I can hopefully avoid all of the issues I was having before.
On that note, since I am returning to this machine, I'm going ahead and ordering new (well, old) RAM for the machine, which will equate to 512MB of RAM, across 3 sticks, PC133, SDRAM, not only to max out the machine, but just incase the RAM in the machine right now has issues (unclear, as of the time I am posting this). And... I am going to give NVIDIA one more chance, and, go for a GeForce 2 GTS. It supports DirectX 7.0 or so, which is the best Windows 98SE can do without stuff breaking, so in my eyes, this is probably the limit/best I can do for this machine, which isn't a Voodoo 4 or 5, which I just cannot even dream of affording.
Any and all advice here, in regards to software and hardware I should ditch (I'm willing to part with the Gigabit ethernet, USB Card, ideally nothing else, if possible. GPU is already planning on being replaced, as mentioned above with me getting a GeForce 2 GTS in the mail within a week or so) would be deeply appreciated. You have all been insanely kind and helpful to me in the past, and I really wanna get this right. So, if I have to part with any specific software, or the cards I mentioned I'd be okay with parting ways with, so be it.
(Sidenote, any specific driver for the GeForce 2 GTS that I should be using when the time comes?)
