Whiplash / Fatal Racing finally gets Voodoo 3 support!

For many years, Whiplash (Fatal Racing in Europe) has been one of those classic 3dfx games that remained strangely tied to the first-generation Voodoo hardware.

Originally designed for 3dfx Voodoo Graphics (Voodoo 1), the game has always been a fascinating example of early Glide gaming.
Over the years, some people managed to get it running on a Voodoo 2, but only with specific tricks (was not native either).

And then… nothing for later Voodoo's cards.

Despite the game being a perfect candidate for later 3dfx hardware, there was no proper solution for running its original Glide version on a Voodoo 3.

Until now...

Here it is, a full implementation of the game running natively with a 3DFX Voodoo 3 (Voodoo 3 3000 tested by me).

This new exe allow to launch Whiplash/Fatal Racing on MS-DOS using your real 3DFX Voodoo 3 GPU !
Full GPU acceleration, expect 50-60 fps along with a decent CPU (from Pentium II 233Mhz).

1) Copy FAT3DFX.EXE to game folder
2) Make sure to use XMS Memory under Pure DOS
3) Run FAT3DFX.EXE the game will use your Voodoo3 for all 3D rendering.

Yes don't hesitate to tell me if you encounter glitchs or issues.
I've only tested my code with a Voodoo 3 3000.

For the moment the patch is in alpha stage so i let the download on my website. Like this i can update it often with bugs/issues found.
You can create a account for free in litteraly 10 seconds and download it.

When it will be stable i will of course post the binary here.

I also don't really like giving my email for a download, I just used a temporary generated email

Yes no problem =).
Tell me your feedbacks when you can try on a real Voodoo 3, make sure to run it in Pure Dos with XMS Memory.
Also the exe is build using Fatal Racing version (the European one) i've not personally tested with Whiplash (the US one) so i don't know yet if it matters.

I'm glad you told us that, as I have the "Whiplash" version and Voodoo 3 in DOS on an Abit BE6-II board.

I tried it on my K6-2+/V3 2000 system tonight. After launching FAT3DFX.EXE I get the gremlin interactive screen, then a black screen and it stays that way until I reset the computer

I am using the US english version of Whiplash

I tried today with Fatal Racing v1-21, it run successfully and plays smoothly. The only glitch I could see is that polygons on the track that are close to the camera have some rendering issues (polygon gaps, partial renders, white flashes etc). It is a bit distracting.

It's the first game I tried with DOS based 3DFX and it is a strange experience seeing it run like that

Thanks for this!

Just to confirm, this patch only allows the game to run on a voodoo3 without adding anything, correct? I mean there should be no difference than running it on a voodoo1?

Also what's the patch based on? I'm asking because you wrote "originally designed for 3dfx Voodoo Graphics (Voodoo 1)...", as far as I know the only official Fatal Racing release with 3dfx support was the one bundled with the Orchid Righteous 3D card. Other than that only an unofficial patch exists.

I tried it on Fatal Racing, and the it works very well on my Voodoo 3 and it plays well. Same 1.21 version as NeoG. I think the rendering issues might be cooked into the rendering engine, and not the fault of the voodoo patch or the Voodoo card. I also noticed when getting *very* close to camera, with dash eliminated, incompletely rendered polygons, white polygons and gaps. But at normal distance (ie, farther out in the horizon) the rendering is perfect.

Is there a way to increase the viewing distance (rendering distance of the horizon) to very far?

I found videos of the orignal 3DFX version, it doesn't seem to have the issue

I'm based on the full PAL version code, without the limitations the 3DFX Voodoo 1 had (like missing HUD elements) and it runs way better (more FPS) than with the original Voodoo 1 version.
And yes it works out of the box directly under pure dos with a Voodoo 3. Just launch my new exe and make sure to run it with XMS memory.

I will soon publish my fixes for :

- Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider Unfinished Business (Voodoo 3 real patch with all glitchs fixed and gamma settings fixed too)
- Screamer 1 (Voodoo 3 patch), for this one the devs never officially published a version who use the 3dfx (was on Screamer 2 & Rally only).
- Dreams to Reality (Voodoo 3 fixes)

One of the issues with the voodoo rush version of tomb Raider on V3 as well is the game crashes in the menu with EMS enabled, meaning you need a separate DOS configuration with just XMS to run it
