one of many articles and videos on a recent trend:

https://videocardz.com/newz/modders-are-now-m … -in-cod-zombies

the supposed process is

- get "ai" to decompile and then port game code to something new so that the game essentially runs as a port.
- do that with other games
- use ai to merge features from one game into another

its often portrayed as something where one prompts and hours later the ai has done it all, but looking into it that's not the case - the ai might speed up decompiling and making sense of things and also porting to new code, but it's not simple, there's a lot of blind alleys and missteps that tend to get missed out on the retelling of "wowzer, look i'm skateboarding in COD"

also, some are not really mingling game features - just altering existing code to adopt small features. Some really are merging broad features of games together though, a pretty big undertaking.

Nevertheless the fact it is happening and taking less time to do than without ai tools is new

Will we all be skate boarding through black mesa soon?

no. All game engines aren't built equally, it'll all be an approximate mush at best. But also it's a terrible concept even when done by humans, see ready player one

FUCK "AI". It is a tool of fascism. We do not need it. We do not use it.

the more i looked into it the less "merged" the games are

games being "merged" tend all to be ones that can be readily modded, and much of this seems to be actually the modding of one game with the game logic or assets of another - still impressive but not like a hybrid recompilation of two games into one

its the mod-ability of the game that creates the context for ai assisted activities, in other words there's lots of info to work with

if we just chose two lesser known and un moddable games and tried the same this it wouldn't work well, it would at best be possible to eventually work a decompilation back into compilable source and then adjust that code with bits learned from other decompiled games

although maybe i misunderstood that too 😀

Reminds of the old Quake mod Airquake, which abused the quake engine to produce a crude flight simulator.

"This all reminds me when i took the windows vista sticker thingy off my old laptop, and on my washing machine as a joke. A few days later said washing machine stopped working. I still think this cannot be a coincidence."

the only good 'merged game' is ROM CHECK FAIL

It's all been done as a Doom WAD years ago anyway. 🤣

Seriously though, remember seeing a mario kart one throwing turtles etc. I bet you can find just about anything if you wanna comb through a few million obscure Doom WADs.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

There's this, and AFAIK it uses no AI and is all based on DeHackEd alone. Projects like this just amplify the contrast between the labour-of-love hand-crafted stuff people are capable of making and the no-effort slop that AI churns out for the instant gratification of those who don't know better.
