What about the soundcard? I've heard the onboard CS4280 has a decent OPL3 compatable synth.
I've went with W98SE on this board and this does not sound anything. Not in dos games ofc. It does on win, but not enough for us. Maybe i'm doing something wrong?

If you're using WDM drivers (usually marked as Win98/ME drivers, try to use VXD ones usually marked as Win95 or Win95/98 drivers

Eh? 😮

The attached file is the driver for a VGA Matrox g200/g400 file, not really the best one to make a sound card working 😁

Where to get them? i've not found any.

Just use the PID and VID values and search with duckduck, but if the sound card is integrated the maker of your MB is the first place to take in account. Then there is vogons drivers, then there are zillions sites dedicated to drivers.

I've been trying with SBEMU. After spending some time configuring, it prompts me
No supported soundcard found!
Maybe I need drivers for the CS4280 under dos¿

Okay I installed this and seemed to work better. Volume was much louder and now MIDI outputs by the synthesizer instead of wave control. Now games sound under win98, but only wave effects, nor synth (music) so I have jumps and so but NO music.
I had 2 installs, one with only files (attached) and other with this and some more files and a program installer. I installed "manually" by the device manager, nor by the installer.

The supossedly "DOS" folder inside this is in fact a OS/2 driver, so It don't features DOS drivers or i've unknown the way to install it. I really don't know how to install this card under dos. Need a clear explanation of it.

Installed then CrystalWave Synthetisher that comes in the w98 installer I attached. Supposed it could be some kind of midi-translator to it's own way to make the job. It did nothing-

Then I went to the folder you sent me, ran the installer and got BSOD on each startup. Now im reinstalling W98 from zero.

Every restart is tedious even more in this board with no memory skipping. I'm spending all weekends on this, and reached a new dimension of headache-.

I attach also a game i'm using to test.

When reinstalled, all is clean again. I've installed the first thing the CS4280 driver from mediafire folder, but in restart it keeps me asking for the driver. I put the route and it accepts it. Then installs a wdm and some things more you see.
Finally it's an unknown thing idk what's is, as w98 don't have device ID indicator.... Don't see so much trouble with any soundcard related, isn't?

(Of course, the wave effects sounds but the music don't, again)

Have you disabled everything onboard, what you do not need (LPT, COM etc.) for more resources availaible?

You have nothing to lose, try this one https://www.mediafire.com/file/c8b655itgaf0yt … /9248U.zip/file

This bios is strange, so... simple...
In PCI device config you have 4 ports, each one only allows you to set Option ROM Scan: Enabled/Disable
Enable Master: Disable/enable.
It dont let you touch any of the internal PCIs.
In the ISA resource exclusion, yo can set from IRQ3 to 11: Avaible, Reserved.
C800 to DFFF: avaible/Reserved. All set to available.
The BIOS is a lot restringed by HP

I've found a driver that works in games with music.
https://thinkpads.com/support/Thinkpad-Driver … es/aftpiw9x.exe

It's on this thread.
Post 1448449

Sadly it does not perform any good.
It runs under Windows 98 or under ms-dos mode too, but in the late no wave effects works.
Lots of channels are lacking. Sound is lamentable empty.
Some games even don't considerate it as a soundcard and sounds by pc speaker.
Sometimes stops sounding while game is running. Then sometimes crash when attemping to close it.

Ah, yes - these business machines are a nightmare when it comes to BIOS settings.

With this sounds too, but idk if it's really the driver or i've installed something in the thinkpad soundpack. Maybe the key was to keep running the correct way the CWCDOS.exe-

Anyways, it sounds very bad. Far from accetable, but I will have to go with it. It would be a bit better if wave effects would work in ms-dos mode too .... How to solve this?

It's missing the DOS driver, as mentioned in the readme—I found something on the disk, but it's originally for the CS4281, so I don't know if it will help you.
In Windows 98, under Control Panel > Multimedia, is Crystal set for MIDI playback?

How to install the drivers? Just run cwrdos.exe?

I assume so—unfortunately, I don't have a Crystal sound card to test it. Alternatively, try the help command: cwrdos /?
In autoexec.bat, try SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T4 J200

Here driver and instructions, not sure if the drivers work, but the instructions shouldn't be any different across various releases.

6. Dos Mode
A. Restarting the computer in MS-DOS mode.
Shutting down to MS-DOS mode from the Shutdown Win95 Menu will automatically run the CWBINIT.EXE /A in dosstart.bat. Therefore, shutting down to MS-DOS mode will automatically have the audio card configured for Dos games.

B. Enabling Dos support in Dos prompt icon.
To enable real DOS mode with CS4232/36/36b/37b/38b support:
1.Select a DOS prompt icon.
2.Select Properties.
3.Go to the Program tab.
4.Select the Advanced... button.
5.Click MS-DOS Mode.
6.Click "Specify a new MS-DOS configuration."
7.The following line will be automatically placed into the new MS-DOS configuration (with right path):
DEVICE=C:\WIN95\CWBINIT.EXE /A
