Shooting from the hip, I'd say the sell it quick low ball end is $500, and market could bear $800 if you are more patient.

Edit: yeah messing around with PCPartPicker choosing lowest "brand name you've heard of" components it's around a $1000 new build. I generally figure, few years old stuff, out of warranty is worth ~50% , quite new but used stuff max of 80%, NIB month old stuff, with receipts to be worth 90%. So my initial guesses pan out according to my logic. You'd have to make special cases or adjust for premium versions of components. But, say you'd got a cheap everything and somehow a $300 cooler, the value of the cooler is not gonna be realised to actually SELL the system, buyer is not gonna go even $100 over value of similar systems, it basically means he puts you first on the list at similar prices. In that sort of scenario, you'd do better to swap the halo product out for cheap generic and sell separately.

With all of the health stuff going on, I haven't had the strength or mental capacity to do much. I've even lost motor control, so it's difficult to type or use a mouse. Using touchscreens (such as my phone) is impossible. I haven't slept well in months either, and I think that's a symptom, not the cause of how poorly I feel. The doctors around here are idiots and just tell me that nothing is wrong with me, but they can prescribe sleeping pills for the insomnia.

I still haven't tried to reapply the undervolt to my Ryzen, but it didn't help enough for me.

I tried upgrading the shitty Toshiba laptop from Lubuntu 22.04 to a newer version. Apparently Ubuntu 24.04 and newer won't display the GRUB boot menu on a non-UEFI system unless you hold down Shift while booting, which makes dual-booting annoying. In the process of trying to get the menu to always appear like it used to, manually running update-grub (instead of being triggered by an update) somehow broke something related to graphics where the entire Internet insists that the only solution is to reinstall the proprietary Nvidia driver. This system does not have Nvidia graphics, and even if it did, the GPU would be too old to be supported by the proprietary driver anyway. At that point, I didn't have the energy to figure out what happened, so I reinstalled. Fortunately, the new Internet lets me download ISOs in minutes instead of hours. I also got a second modem configured as a WiFi extender, and it also works as an Ethernet to WiFi bridge to bypass the shitty Realtek WiFi card that computer has (a card that was abnormally slow when it was new).

The other modern activity is the ridiculous amount of political spam text messages I've been getting. They come from a different number every time, so you can't block them. I get several a day.

Another stick of RAM arrived today.
I bought a Samsung M471A1K43CB1-CTD because thats what I already have and want to new stick to match the stick I already have but the seller sent me a Micron MT44ATF1G64HZ-3G2B2 stick instead...

This is the 5th time so far Ive bought a stick of spercific RAM because I want that RAM and not another brand and the wrong RAM turned up.
The 4th time it didnt turn up the seller contacted me and asked if it was ok to send the wrong RAM to which i said no its not...

Am I the only one who gets this problem?

Had it with CPUs, a recycler out of Calgary doesn't care what they send. Listing said see picture for details, received CPU was 2 speed grades lower. Was low amount and I got busy so didn't get the dispute filed.

Got my Google voice land line working again on the old Obi200. I don't remember when it stopped working, I think Obihai went out of business. Someone patched the firmware and through a convoluted process you can link it up to google voice again. I love that I can just give out the google voice number and it will ring through to my cell, If that number is compromised then just change numbers.

Yeah its unreal!
Especially when its worse than what you thought you were buying.
This RAM sent to me isnt, its 3200 not the 2666 I needed it to be. So thats a win of sorts but its not because its not the right one.

If you have 3200 and want it to ID as 2666, you could always try editing the SPD. (I think the utility for this was called thaiphoon?)

Im not going to bother, Im just going to send it back!
It will cost the seller two round trip shipping costs but I really dont care any more.
Ive been trying to get hold of this RAM for 3 weeks 2 days now.

It sucks that you are basically getting baited and switched by a seller who does not seem to distinguish between advertising something specific versus selling items from a bulk lot specced to minimal common denominator and capacity.

I am however curious as to your specific use case for wanting matching parts. Higher specced DDR4 DIMMs should handle lower clocks and, barring rare specific incompatibilities, should work when paired in dual channel between different brands. Does the BIOS perhaps react badly or suboptimally to mismatched SPD/XMP timings in the board this is meant for ?
Or is this a personal preference or proactive precaution in regards to potential future use cases, which is fine by me and your absolute right ?

EDIT: Also, for the prices these are going for these days, it is reasonable to expect a seller to be more diligent. If anything, that seller is losing money simply by sending out any 3200 specced parts when advertising 2666 specced parts.

Ill be putting it into a HP 260 G3 Mini PC. It will be running network services such as unbound, PiHole etc in docker containers, but I will also be running a BBS and IRCd from it so I want it to be as stable as possible.
Unmatched RAM isnt in itself a problem but I want it to have the best start it can have, and matching the RAM sticks is always a good start.

Thank you. That makes sense. If prices were not as crazy as they are, sourcing a matched pair would probably be the path of least resistance.

8Gb DDR4 2666 SODIMM is £22.93...
Its not a lot of cash but it has certainly gone up double since a year ago. You struggled to give 8Gb sticks away a year ago.
That was how I managed to get 32Gb in my HP EliteDesk 800 G3 DM with an i7-7700 because it was so cheap.

Now its not at all.

Its not rare as RAM goes, but it does seem harder than you think to get hold of it.
Ebay sellers list the RAM I want but once I win the auction they tell me what I wanted isnt what they actually have. It all seems to be Micron equivalent to it. Which isnt a bad thing in itself, nothing wrong with Micron RAM its just that I already have an 8Gb Samsung stick I want matching...

So here we are 3 weeks 3 days later and my PC still only has 8Gb installed in it.

If it wasnt happening to me I wouldnt believe it could happen.

I had the same machine until a couple of years ago, I replaced it with the AMD Cousin EliteDesk 705 G4.

Surely the AMD is a better idea from the current usage perspective, but the Intel machine granted a way easier life from the retro computing perspective, less buggy CSM, availability of modded x86 drivers, better patched acpi.sys drivers for Xp/Vista and so on.

Another thing I learned about those HP miniPCs, as a lover of low power machines I looked at the 35W Intel T CPUs or AMD GE.

Theoretically is a great idea, practically it isn't.

Normal 65W CPUs consume almost the same in Idle (which is what matters, practically) while having more computational power when required, but aside that, 65W machines come with copper heatsink, and a grilled cover, while 35W come with aluminium heatsink and a closed cover.

Result: 65W machines are more powerful, fresher, quieter, while consuming the same in average, and last but not least 65W machines often are also cheaper.

Yeah, it does feel like you're stuck in a Monty Python sketch.
It might still be simpler to get a matched pair (assuming a vendor can still be found advertising and actually selling that) and selling what you have (or consigning it to the spares bin).

I see such a 16GB set in the UK at £31.58 +£2.72 delivery (2 x M471A1G44AB0-CWE , 8GB 1Rx16 PC4-3200AA-SC0-11), for example.

Good point about 35W vs 65W. I will add that lowering the power envelope to 35W (if BIOS/UEFI allows) on such a 65W based system, effectively "overspecs" the cooling solution, if one wants to keep things cool even under higher CPU load.

On a semi-related note, I am on the cusp of de-Inteling one of my last "modern" Intel based setups, an i9 9900K (95W, officially) + Gigabyte z390 based board ( and 4x16GB DDDR4 2666 RAM, which I am keeping). I have a spare Ryzen 7 5700x (65W) ready and an x570 board on the way. Depending on future finances, I might splurge on another Ryzen 9 5900XT (95W) (I have two of those in service already, one in my daily driver and one in a homelab setup). I'll probably be able to rehome the Gigabyte board and Intel CPU locally . EDIT: For me at least, AM4 has been the best platform since slot 1/socket 370 in terms of longevity.

Anyway, the switch to AMD will give me bit more idle power draw, and a lot less power draw under load.

The bios doesn't allow that, at least on my ED 705, not sure about the ED 800 given it was already a 35W machine. But after all limiting the peak power isn't a so smart move, usually.

I mean, if you need to run some server say tvheadend or a ftp server, the machine runs anyway at it's lower frequency or close to that. But when you have to run something heavier say, compiling a Linux kernel you want to get that kernel compiled quickly and doing that at 65W for few minutes doesn't change your life, and at 65W the energy consumed will be likely the same, if not lower.

Perhaps would be an interesting benchmark, having a power/energy meter if compiling a Linux kernel @35 W consume less or more energy than doing the same at @65W.

Likely the difference is irrelevant but still good to know.

It took decades to see power numbers in benchmarks, it's about time to see also energy numbers.

All valid points...
The cheapest Elitedesk 704 G4 on ebay is £110.
I got the 260 G3 for £53

I want to see if I can run it all from what is basically a laptop without a screen.
It will be funny to see an IRCd runnning from a laptop CPU and a home internet connection given all the power we used to pile into them back in the day.

I have many PCs I could use both with 35W and 65W CPUs I just want to see if I can do it from the i5-7200U.
It really is no more than a desire of mine to do it like that.

Regarding the power used on idle between the 35W and 65W TDP packages you are right, at idle they are basically equals, but the 65W ramp more aggressively, and the i7 over i5 even more so.

I almost bought the 2400GE CPU version just the other day but those systems just hold their price here in the UK. They are really popular on the home lab market.

I will be running Ubuntu server on it, with docker containers.
Ill see how it goes, if it doesnt work out I can always swap it out for something more powerful. Like I said I have many to chose from.

It feels like that at the minute.
This is the seller response to me
"Ah yes I recall the stick that I was meant to send you didn’t pass the tests
So I assumed you would be happy wiht a higher speed?"

In the normal course of events I wouldnt have a problem but this time I do...

This is the 4th seller who has assumed I could do with a different stick than what I bought.
I feel like a sh*t sending it back because he acted for the best but I want matching sticks...
Its worth about £5 more than I paid, but outside the 260 G3 I have no use for it.

Yes, but, at least on Intel machines those things can be controlled easily using Throttle Stop under Windows or the power-cap utils under Linux (I use them for opposite reasons to decap my N100 from the ridiculous value of 6W (the CPU is rated for 35W)

On the AMD machines isn't that easy, even official AMD utils don't manage older gens Ryzen, whatever maybe the situation is evolving from the last time I looked at the matter

Yeah, I got mine one year ago for 85 euro shipping included from the NL one year ago or so. But that was a machine w/o WIFI, HDD, and just 4GB of RAM installed, other than that it was practically a brand new machine, zero scratches, zero dust, perfect.
