VSC-55 - Virtual SC-55/SC-55mkII for Windows98.

The attachment vsc55.png is no longer available

https://youtu.be/lb-vyEWiCVQ

Features:
-appears as VSC-55 in Windows MIDI output selection
-plays Windows MIDI applications and MIDI routed from DOS games under Windows (via VOPL3, when using WDM drivers, VOPL3 - Virtual OPL3 FM + MPU-401 bridge for Windows 98/ME ).
-SC-55 front panel with LCD and buttons, plus a settings window.
-supports SC-55 and SC-55mkII with FW: 1.00, 1.10, 1.20, 1.21 and 2.00; SC-55mkII 1.01 and CTF-patched 1.01
-starts in the systray, default stopped (can be configured so that the emulation is always running)
-sound output through waveOut

Installation
-run INSTALL.BAT.
-copy your ROM files to C:\VSC-55\ROMS (see project github link for folder structure)
-reboot

Credits:
-based on nukeykt's Nuked-SC55 https://github.com/nukeykt/Nuked-SC55
-VSC-55 uses jcmoyer's Nuked-SC55 fork https://github.com/jcmoyer/Nuked-SC55
-faceplate from linoshkmalayil's Nuked-SC55-GUI-Float https://github.com/linoshkmalayil/Nuked-SC55-GUI-Float with GUI code work from kebufu https://github.com/mckuhei/Nuked-SC55
-chatgpt was used for some parts

Tested on a Dell Precision M4800 with HDA and WDMHDA audio driver, I7-4940MX CPU.

Important note: you need a FAST CPU for this. On the 4940MX CPU (which runs at 4GHz under W98) CPU usage is around 30-40%, depending on the emulated model (SC-55 vs SC55-mkII).

will this support scc1a roms? it would be very cool if this could be optimized to run on a very fast athlon xp that would be used as a dedicated softmpu serial bridge target.

I take it this verified successful implementation of the mkII CTF patcher? The growing scarcity of the original hardware may be making it too precious to run such experiments on, but the result could be the ideal balance (in many games) with original SC-55 tones [not carried over 100% into the SC-88 and later units] and lifting of polyphony limits plus CTF compatibility.

@stanwebber it's based on Nuked-SC55, which supports SC-155. However, only SC-55 and SC-55mkII are enabled at the moment.
As for optimizations, it's already optimized as much as possible without starting digging into the Nuked-SC55 internals (which I'd like to avoid).

@BaronSFel001 VSC-55 is just some glue logic attached to Nuked-SC55 so it runs under Windows98. Since it's based on Nuked-SC55, it should support that.

the nuked-sc55 source will compile as-is and run on a 32bit i686 kernel (with no sse2 instructions), but my athlon xp 2100 is still too slow for it without further optimization. the scc1a roms seem to have the lightest cpu footprint.

this is a very nice compliment to vopl3! the only other thing missing from the win98 dos audio toolbox is gus emulation which really hasn't been done outside of dosbox. there is a desktop gus emulator (https://www.deinmeister.de/gusemu/) that runs in win9x, but there's no windows driver for it. timidity uses gus patch sets and has a win9x port, but it's not really an emulator. would it be a complex operation for you to port the dosbox gus emulation over to vopl3 (at a fixed address)? i presume dma would be required so a bit more involved than adlib redirection alone...or could this work as a standalone project like you did with vsc-55?

the other bits of the toolbox would be covered by vdmsound (covox/disney) and munt (mt-32). sergm released a current win9x port of munt-qt, but he got rid of the driver binary he wrote for it which i still use (attached). it was a bolt-on affair that could crash if accessed while munt-qt wasn't loaded so maybe he was too unhappy with it. it would be cool if your code for vsc-55 could be adapted to provide a more stable windows driver for munt-qt under win9x.

maybe no hope *ever* of running vsc-55 on my kt133a, kt880 or pt880 boards...the only other board i have that still has win9x drivers is a gigabyte ga-ep45-ud3p with a quad core lga775 cpu so there'd be no problem there i'd thnk.

I have never used a GUS before, but I presume that dealing with DMA and IRQ will be a real pain. I might take a look at some point.

As for munt:

Haven't released it yet as I want to make an accurate faceplate reproduction for it.

Regarding your older system and SC-55 emulation, the emulation is very CPU intensive. Maybe hook up a real SC-55 for those systems?
