I've had a lot of fun playing Geoff Crammond's F1 Grand Prix over the years. But it's always been a faff to get it working on a modern PC. So over the past ~10 months, I've built gp64 which runs it natively on Windows or macOS (on ARM). Under the covers it's a 16-bit emulator written in Rust with VGA, Adlib music - and a serial modem too (wouldn't want to miss out on networked games ๐. It does the real negotiation but cheats when the connection is up to using serial over TCP (otherwise it's fiddly dealing with jitter on TCP). There's a video of a modem connected game here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeTzJTES8a8&t
Download it from: https://github.com/0x4D44/gp64/releases/latest, drop gp64 alongside your existing game files and run "gp64". It finds F1GP.BAT or GP.EXE and starts the game. Note it doesn't contain any original code or resources - you'll need to provide your own copy.
F12 opens the in-game menu - you can enable recording (using my own VP9 & Opus codecs ๐, enable serial or modem connections, or change the video scaler.
It started last December on a train as an experiment to see how far Claude & Codex could get. I wrote about it at the time: https://substack.com/home/post/p-182938444 and again later: https://substack.com/home/post/p-215637956.
It's a purely personal project (GPL3.0) which I'll update intermittently. I've had so much fun from the game and the community (I've got the carsets for most years ๐, that it's nice to be able to offer something back to all you amazing folk. I hope you have fun with it!
