I'm excited to share some new drivers that make it possible to run ancient versions of Windows on any VBE-capable video card:
https://github.com/dbrant/winvbe

I know that VBE drivers exist for Windows 3.1x and 9x, but I don't believe it's been done yet for Windows 3.0 or older.

Here is Windows 1.04 running in 1280x1024:

And Windows 2.03 running in full HD (1920x1080):

And Windows 3.0 running in 1600x1200 with TrueColor:

Just love that these old versions get such care. They are not speed sensitive. Only that 3.0 is memory size sensitive.

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.
PS. If I upload RAR, it is a 16-bit DOS RAR Version 2.50.

1. Can you also make 640x480 versions.
2.What limitation are there to make a 256color driver for Windows 1.x? Allso high color for Windows 2.x

One bug in Windows 2.11 and 256 color driver. And if you try to change Windows colors from Control Panel, it changes strange things like button corner colors to something random also with window buttons.

Thanks!
And... done -- I have updated the drivers to include 640x480 resolution. Not sure how that slipped by me!

Regarding the bug you mention, I tested the drivers on Windows 2.03, not 2.11. When I have some extra time I'll spin up an image with 2.11 and debug.

And regarding 256 colors in Windows 1.x and high color on Windows 2.x, it might be doable but probably not worth it, and might even have some negative tradeoffs. First, I'm not sure if there was ever any software for Windows 1.x that required 256 colors, or would even benefit from it... And then on Windows 2.x, same argument: would any software benefit from high color? Windows 2.x doesn't support device-independent bitmaps, so we can't have things like photos or 24-bit images on the screen at all. And also, various programs actually depended on the graphics being planar (i.e. 4 bit planes, giving 16 colors), which already doesn't work well with 256 colors, and would fail entirely with high color.

Hi, I may be wrong, but I think that Windows 2.x in the 1980s had considered 256c to be high-end.
It has a dithering system that worked very well on CRT monitors of its time.
I remember I wrote about it a few years ago: Re: 256 or more colors for games in Window 3.x?

Edit: By default, Windows 2.x merely uses 8 colours in 16 color video modes (EGA, VGA etc).
That's not necessarily a bad thing, though. The 8 colours gave Windows 2.x a distinguish look.

Oh, and there's a difference in Windows 2.03 vs Windows/386 2.11:
The Windows 2.03 VGA driver uses full 640x480, while the Windows/386 v2.11 driver has a reduced screen size (640x450).
It was changed for better compatibility with Windows applications written for EGA monitors.
