I’m not sure if this has been mentioned before, but would it be possible to add support for using ZIP-compressed games (without unzipping them) in DOSBox Pure Unleashed?
Best regards.

Supporting the bare directories only was a decision I made early on, as it allows switching between different dosboxes for the same game easily, and is what the dosbox launcher in dfendx expects. I will note this for a possible future enhancement though. Cheers
Hi! I found a bug—now the images show up, but when I try to open a screenshot from a game by double-clicking it, nothing happens; it doesn't open in my default image viewer.
Just a reminder that I'm using the beta version of Linux, running AppImage on Arch Linux.

Hi, I have another Linux build to try: https://send.bitwarden.com/#TKW_h_2_nEWY37TmA … 892qrQ6J9i-6VXQ
I have fixed most of the UI layout issues in the Profile editor (many more remain in other parts of the application though).
Also, I have added an extra path for opening images when the default MIME handlers are not installed (tested in Lubuntu and Arch).
Let me know what else you find!
Hi! Honestly, I can't but congratulate you! You've done a great job!
So far, all the bugs I reported earlier have disappeared, and everything is working great.
A few minor details I found:
1) In the game profile editor, the icons don't appear above the “OK” , “Cancel” and “Help” buttons.
2) In the program settings (DFendX), under the “General” section, there’s an option that says “Start with Windows.” Since it now works practically perfectly on Linux, I think you could change it to “Start with the system” or something like that.
3) Could you add a view mode called “Covers” that displays the images vertically instead of horizontally? That way, the game boxes in our collection would appear slightly larger and more detailed, without wasting so much space on either side. It could also include an option to hide the text, since the title would already be on the box itself.
4) Perhaps you could implement automatic updates for the DFendX AppImage for Linux in the same way that the DuckStation app does.
5) When I right-click on a game's profile and select “View DOSBox conf files” or “Search game - The Games DB” for example, nothing happens.
That's all I've found so far. Aside from these minor errors and the occasional issue with margins or missing translations of certain words in the DFendX options menu, the program is almost ready to be officially released for Linux so that many more people can enjoy it.
Thanks again for all your hard work, and let's stay in touch! Best regards!!

Hi, thanks again for the feedback!
1) In the game profile editor, the icons don't appear above the “OK” , “Cancel” and “Help” buttons.
>> That's weird, I had the same problem, but I made some changes to fix it, and have not seen it again. Could you attach a screenshot?

Yes, that will be cleaned up eventually. Still going through the pages one by one 😁

Yes, that's a good idea, and would be applicable to the windows build to. I will look at that in the next release.
4) Perhaps you could implement automatic updates for the DFendX AppImage for Linux in the same way that the DuckStation app does.
One day. I consider Linux an experimental build right now, that will be post public release.
5) When I right-click on a game's profile and select “View DOSBox conf files” or “Search game - The Games DB” for example, nothing happens.
I suspect that is due to the lack of a file editor handler being triggered. And I have not even looked at the internet connectivity yet for the Linux build - I think the whole path was disabled.
Thanks for continuing to test!
Latest release:
Version 2.6.5 (10/18/2026)
==========================
- AWE32 Romdir and RAM size options
- Gus mixer option
- CGA/PCJr composite video option
- DOS UTF8 filenames support
- ScummVM game options update
- various UI tweaks
Here's an image showing that the icons aren't appearing on the buttons
I discovered a new bug: when editing a game's information on its profile and trying to paste text into the notes field, an access violation error appears.
Another thing I noticed, as shown in the same screenshot, is that the program runs on X11 (which is a protocol that is no longer under active development and is now only in maintenance mode). Would it be possible for DFendX to run natively on Wayland?
Best regards, and I look forward to the next update for the Linux version.

So I've been wanted to do this for years, but lacking any knowledge of delphi was kind of a barrier. But then I discovered my supergrok subscription came with fairly generous credits for Grok Build (the terminal UI coding agent), and I thought what the heck let's give it a try. So after throwing two months worth of credits at it, I finally have the DFend I always wanted.
* New and improved things
- DOSBox-X and DOSBox Staging detection and support (naturally).
- Full support for detection and selection of pixel shaders/presets.
- Support for fluidsynth as a midi device - gain and soundfont path.
- Vsync/inactive screen option.
- Direct Windows MIDI interface detection.
- Rebuilt in RAD 12 with Unicode and modern Windows support.
- eXoDOS support for metadata, media and game import.
- Autoplay ambient music for games with soundtracks.
- Dozens of renamed/removed/changed dosbox config options updated in the config generator.* Stuff I got rid of
- The classic profile editor.
- Bundled DOSBox classic and FreeDOS.
- Inbuilt video player (audio player remains, upgraded to use bass.dll).
- Numerous bug fixes and issues corrected.* Stuff I would like to do if I have time
- At least one working metadata update URL (harder than it seems, most have gone behind API keys or paywalls).
- MT32 options support (rom/soundfont paths).
- 64-bit (would be nice).
- WinXP support (maybe one day, possible in theory with deep hacks of the delphi RTL).Drop any comments or issues here or the github issues page. Note this will install alongside any existing D-Fend installations without conflict. You will have to copy over profiles manually as there is no import tool yet.

EDIT: What is DFendX?
DFendX is a resurrection of one of the OG DOSBox Frontends, D-Fend Reloaded (itself a remake of the even older D-Fend). The name D-Fend literally means D(OSBox)-F(ront)end. D-Fend reloaded was/is one of the most widely used DOSBox Frontends, but development stopped in 2015, before the rise of DOSBox-X and DOSBox-Staging, and lacked compatibility with those popular DOSBox forks, as well as modern Windows. DFendX is a modernization effort of D-Fend Reloaded with a primary focus of support for DOSBox-X and DOSBox Staging, as well as modern Windows support (Unicode, high-DPI etc). Here is a screenshot of DFendX that shows some of the new features added (otherwise identical to how D-Fend Reloaded appeared):
is the amazing dos game real?
