Going back to AI from gun ownership, I was just browsing a book store for which I got a discount voucher for, I was surprised how repulsive do I find AI cover art. And it feels like every fiction book from the last 3 or so years have that. Makes me not want to read anything released since the AI boom.

Interesting subject. So I think most people agree here that David's venture into AI will probably not result in a large audience. AI coverart in books is clearly a no-go for you.

It's not that I'm outright against using AI for cover art, but the cover art produced with AI are absolutely and objectively horrendous most of the time. And it makes you think that's how the writer and publisher chooses to represent their work, what could be the quality of the work itself? And for post AI boom books, what's the guarantee that the content itself isn't AI slop?

Bah. Cover art for most books used to be horrendous before AI. Your other points notwithstanding.

I read somewhere that people nowadays think Starship Troopers is a classic. The book? No doubt! The Verhoeven movie? Not so much. Same category I guess 😀

Starship Troopers is a cult classic. I didn't like it when I first saw it, but I think bad marketing was a lot to do with that. I expected a generic sci-fi action movie, but didn't appreciate (or even understand) the satire in the film.

I've since learned to like that movie, mostly by re-calibrating my expectations. Now, I love it. 😁

The book is good too, but very different from the film from what I remember.

I will say this about David Murray, I stand by my earlier comment that he defies stereotyping.

yeah david murray WAS one of my childhood memories almost 8 to 10 yrs ago. but yeah i STILL dislikes that ai-generated movies/images in the 8bit guys' name. to me i never advertise myself using llms without polishing, or any ai that generates images and videos at all. (i have the ability to use tools to make illustrations by hand, why not)

he is a guy brought lots of inspirations so that's why i had interests in pixel/bitmap fonts. i think i will just separate projects. graphics mode skills give me inspiration, but i won't be interested in ai works, but all in all i would respect david murray, and every people in the thread, despite some of them had different or contradictory opinions to me

I really liked his series on Commodore history. I learned a lot from that. He also has an interview with the designer of the C128 which is cool.

"This all reminds me when i took the windows vista sticker thingy off my old laptop, and on my washing machine as a joke. A few days later said washing machine stopped working. I still think this cannot be a coincidence."

His AI movie released. Oooh boy.

Youtube comments are absolutely savage.

I'm afraid to look and see what Reddit thought of it.

That's honestly the entertaining part.

Self-insert main characters are always cringe, but here it's just turned up to 11

You weren't kidding. I watched the first 15 minutes out of morbid curiosity... and it's this story about this "tech" guy rescuing/kidnapping this hot goth villain so he can nurse her back to health after some battle in which she was wounded by some toxin that he created?

And that's almost the entirety of the first 15 minutes.

As far as conventional stories go, this is... not good. Even leaving aside the AI aspect, this whole thing is cringy and creepy.

As a self-insert fiction about a tech guy doting on a hot goth girl... I can see why this exists.

the comments can be hilarious!

However, these kinds of movies are fore runners of what is to develop

In the hands of others it can be fun (eg a couple of channels doing AI episodes of GTA VC (soraverse, vndl) ), and it can be genuinely good at shorter pieces when used as part of a suite of tools in the right hands, people who know how to make tv/movies etc (example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE84ZYfnniU)

this 8 bit one is lolz though

In terms of AI generated video content, the ones I have found most enjoyable are the Soviet Star Trek ones from Dreamloop Cinema on YT.

They are far from perfect, with some continuity errors and some of the usual issues one sees in AI generated video, but the writing is, IMHO, very good, and sometimes hilarious, in addition to being thought provoking. The campiness actually works in its favor.

As weird as it might seem, it feels to me a bit like a single narrator radio show to which visuals have been tacked on and I feel the format really works. Maybe this is cringe to some, but to me it is well executed satire.

From a legal and content rights point of view, despite this being parody, which grants it at least some footing, I do have concerns, as I also do with generative AI in general.

That being said, and getting back to Dave Murray's AI video, [super]hero stuff is usually not my thing, so I am not usually inclined to seek it out, with some exceptions, so I am likely not even in the scope of the potential target audience from the start. There is likely an audience for practically everything, and I will not judge anyone's tastes in escapist entertainment ( I like Italian low budget scifi, action and horror ripoffs from the 70s and 80s).

He joins the ranks of renowned self-inserts like Neil Breen, Tommy Wiseau, and John de Hart, but I respect that they actually committed their embarassing fantasies to celluloid. Can someone dub this to VHS and send it to Milwaukee?

BastichB 64k (Brendan) uses AI. I personally dislike AI, but I love his videos. he has made great videos, reviews and documentaries over the last few years. AI irks me big time.

Considering all the shenanigans he posted with the guns and Teslas and whatnot, the guy appears to have a very hard time reading the room. Hes likely quite a bit far on the spectrum. That, combined with the unhealthy fascination he has with his AI chatbot GF, is why I think he decided to post so much cringe on main.

Also, and this is just my very limited observation, but it also looks to me like Davids generation (Gen X) seems to be the most fascinated with AI content for some reason.

I use Higgsfield myself.
I watched it. I really cant congratulate him on it. It looks like many of the scenes only made it to the final cut because he made them but didnt know what was wrong with them and that they should have been regenerated.

If you know you know, if you dont then there is no point explaining it.

He has a long way to go.

I think Gen X is maybe more vocal about it and given the age now they are in a better position to be able to afford it. Much more than the millennials and certainly more than the zoomers.
