what in the holy heck is going on with the prices that people are actually willing to pay for P4s..
phils computer lab is selling a few extreme editions on ebay at the moment..
one of which is up to $1150 with 2 days still to go.. yes $1150 .. wtf

i mean i have a p4 but i didnt think anyone really cared much for them.. considered them an all round disappointment.. guess i was way wrong about that...
the p3 tualatins go for a bit but i had no idea a p4 would be 10x the price.

make it make sense! worlds gone truely mad

That's wild, which ones are they? I wonder what my Pentium Extreme (Smithfield) SL8FK is worth

Are you talking $1150 in Australian dollars?

That's still 800 USD of course.

Only certain S-Spec P4s are worth money.

Philscomputerlab did a lot to drive up prices, which isnt a good thing.

By creating this post you've pushed the price up even further. There will be more bidders now 🤣 The CPUs are worth more because they are owned by the most famous retro PC YouTuber (especially if the specific CPU was featured in a video). I think Phil deserves the money for all the entertainment and effort he's put in over the years.

Since forever, I've been hoping to find an EE that's just been listed as a normal P4 🤣 seems like the only chance to find a reasonably priced one.
Absolutely most interested in Gallatin though ..

If it's dual it's kind of cool ... 😎

It's not a bad thing to get more people interested in the hobby, though.

Some people have to have The Best at any cost, for their period accurate high end builds, even if a core 2 that fits in the same motherboard and is basically free would perform better.

heh, I saw a K5 PR200 up for sale yesterday cant remember if it was a 500 starting bid or 500 buy out but its not listed today so I guess it sold fast.

I get why its 500 bucks due to rarity but its a K5...and a K6 200 would be much faster.

So yeah 1200 for a P4 D 965 Extreme isn't odd, its a super rare chip and any I do see listed start around 1k USD, also its from a well known YT retro hardware creator so you know full well that chip is 100% going to work and will have been looked after.

If it doesn't have to have that specific writing on it because it's gonna hide under the heatsink you can get one just under 6% slower clock that says Xeon on it instead at 75% or so discount.

P.S. Anyone after a cheap Tualeron might wanna search SL6C7 real quick.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Well, it would be for running it in Socket 478b board. I just have a thing for architectures running in their non-native environment, like RapidCAD which is basically a 486 on a 386 board, Pentium Overdrive 5V for 486 boards, Gallatin based P4, etc 😀

Pentium II on Socket 8 ..I have one of these and its a wonderful CPU which really lets socket 8 shine.

Ive even seen Socket 8 slotket type things for early Slot 1 boards which lets a socket 8 CPU run there ...truly an odd thing and Im not sure what the benefits would be other than having AGP on a Pentium Pro.

Yes, the P2OD too. I own one, Unfortunately with really bad pins, and I don't have a socket 8 board 😕

I'm still not sure which Socket 8 CPU I like more the P2OD 333 or the PPro 200 1Mb ...the Pro 1Mb on a dual socket board would be fun to own but the prices I've seen for working dual socket 8 boards is rather eye watering if I ever decide to take that jump itll be right at the end of my retro days when I have a ton of disposable cash on hand and wont care a bit how much it costs.

Surely for PentiumPro 1M the dream is at least a Quad Socket system, I have 4 x SL25A so "just" need a motherboard.

Last weekend I had to replace the PSU in my Dual PODP66X333 SL2KE system, initially I thought something very bad was wrong and was relieved when I tried a modern PSU. I am none too sure about using an RGB PSU though...

I can only sensibly run NT4 as with both Windows 2000 and XP the CPU-1 cache ends up not working, I can't figure out why and/or fix this.

Out of interest what do these CPU sell for on such as eBay?

Sell . .depends on the demand .. the 1Mb CPUs tend to be on the rare side but I would pull up some sold listings over of Evilbay and work from that.

Quad ...ok so now I have a new even more expensive and less likely to be working target...still it must be done !

I disagree. Opening up the hobby to the wrong people just makes the hobby less accessible to those who are actually interested in it and take the time and effort to learn and make the community richer. And I don't say that Phil or Clint (LGR) are majorly responsible for it, but the hobby did become less accessible because speculative investors pushed prices up. Now a lot of people who aren't interested in retro hardware and software trading them between each other to make a buck in the meanwhile they aren't just not providing value to the community, they actively remove value from it.

Luckily this particular Pentium 4 EE is quite useless, as you can get faster Core 2 Duos for cheaper...

Thank you and I suspect it all comes down to timing, I have long pined for a Quad Socket 8 system, never got one, but do have 4 bootable Quad socket systems:

  1. Dell 6300/450 - 4 x Intel Pentium II Xeon (Drake) 450MHz [B1] @ SL33V
  2. HP DL580 G4 - 4 x Intel Xeon MP 7140M DC (Tulsa) 3.40GHz [B0] @ SL9HA
  3. HP DL580 G5 - 4 x Intel Xeon MP X7460 XC (Dunnington) 2.66GHz [A1] @ SLG9P
  4. HP DL580 G8 - 4 x Intel Xeon E7-4880 v2 (Ivy Bridge-EX) 2.50GHz [D1] @ SR1GM

I got them while they were still available and as, I suspect, companies did not want them the prices were very reasonable. I also guess it depends where you live as international shipping could be a killer.

I just spotted https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/168248991034 - 2 x SL25A for GBP 250 and wonder if that is typical. I recall them in the windows of London computer shops for I think GBP 1500 or 2000 in the late 1990's
