Hello all,

I have been following this forum for a very long time now, but never had the opportunity to create a new topic !

I got recently a DB50XG MIDI daughterboard, that remains totally silent. I am 100% sure of my test setup. A Korg Wave MIDI DB on the same SB16 waveblaster plays nicely.
So this is the DB 50XG that is clearly defective.

As I am totally not skilled to do such investigations and repairs, could you please give me some contacts of people that would accept to repair it ?

Your help is very appreciated !
Thanks a lot.

I believe I know this card. It looks like new but doesn't output anything. It didn't work on my test system while my other one did. Something is broken...

Just an advice... don't buy anything that is tested non-working and you don't know how to fix it - it's not worth the money.

Thanks for your reply. I managed to get a refund from the seller, but I am pretty sure that someone skilled could spot the defect (bad cap / solder joint...) and repair it.
Those cards are now incredibly rare...

Ah, then this must be some other card. This seller was selling it for parts and description was clear that the card was tested and didn't function. I doubt he would refund anything.

I have repaired one DB50XG which was silent. It turned out to be a defective DAC chip on that particular card.

@Tiido I'd be glad if you could inspect and possibly repair this good old DB50XG. I send you a PM about this ! 😀

My brothers DB50XG died in a similar way years ago and it was thrown away 🙁

I have now made the card work again, but unfortunately it didn't have an easy problem. It turns out the actual sound chip and one of the sample ROMs were damaged, possibly from 12V stub from a capacitor on a neighboring card getting in contact with an unfortunate location. It is one reason I very much dislike chips on top WB cards, they will nearly always collide with neighboring card since clearance is pretty much nonexistent.

Unfortunately the replacement chips come from another (expensive) Yamaha device...

know this thread is very old, but I'm having the same problem.
I found it via Google while searching for the cause.

My Yamaha DB50 XG is silent.
The card itself still gets warm. I can't see any obvious damage.
The question is whether you're even still doing this, or if it's worth it.

I think it is always worth to try to repair, these are not produced anymore and more often than not the problem is not in one of the irreplaceable parts.

Yes, I think so too.

But due to a lack of equipment and knowledge, I unfortunately cannot perform an analysis on the Board.
Unfortunately, I haven't yet found anyone through the search engine who would do an analysis or repair here.

I'm just going to ask.
According to your description, you're from Norway.
Would you possibly repair a card like this?
I'm from Germany myself. I would then send the card.

Yeah, I live in Norway. I can definitely take a look but I cannot promise anything but likelyhood of things getting into working state are pretty high. I have sent a PM with information to go further.

As far as repair goes, I can take measurements of the signals between chips to see what kind of activity there is, if any and then go from there. If there is output to DAC but nothing comes out of the chip it is quite clear that it is bad, if DAC outputs a signal but it won't reach the WB connector there's only a few more analog things that can cause the problem. But if DAC receives nothing then the problem will be on the digital side. There could be a bad solder, missing clock, a bad chip... diagnostics process will ultimately reveal the culprit and as long as it isn't the main sound chip, it should be a relatively easy fix ~
