Mdk done!
This game with its wild artstyle really is something, on a huge monitor even with low-res assets it just looks amazing.

All the games in this batch are patched, also resolved an issue with Turok where reflections were black, and Ignitions flickering of 2d elements.

Now for Diablo II, I can only test the early section, since I havent progressed further in the game, tried to cover everything and lets hope there are no more merchants that are handled differently further on 😀.
Added 800x600-equivalent resolutions in 16:9, 16:10 and 21:9 , 1064x600 for 16:9, 960x600 for 16:10, 1400x600 for 21:9. This allows the same pixel size as the game expects it. While it will also work with other, higher resolutions, the world will get smaller and there will be artifacts on the borders and other things breaking in the game, so best to stick to the x600 height. I saw that other patches use 1068x600 for its 16:9, but that resolution wont work with the Voodoo.

Some games wont have their main menu scaled, some do.

All the patches, that are built in the driver, will be located in GameFixes class. If someone wants to do it, they can be made to patch the .exe directly and it will work with a wrapper like nGlide.

A bit of testing and that I upload/write everything and it goes into the wild!

3dfx Wide driver v1.5

The attachment IMG_20260819_091312.jpg is no longer available

Voodoo4/5 Wide Driver
Version 1.5

**************************************************************************************************************************************
Voodoo Series Driver Kit: 1.0
Voodoo Series Win9x 2D/3D Display Drivers: 4.13.01.0028
Glide 2.X Driver: 1.00.01.0107 (glide2->glide3 wrapper)
Glide 3.X Driver: 3.10.00.40408 (Glide sourceForge project)
OpenGL Driver Version: MesaFx 7.4.4.0 (v0.76) (OpenGL ICD)
**************************************************************************************************************************************

Release Notes
=======================================================================
Version 1.5
- Game Ignition fix, that caused flickering of UI elements and eventually locked-up.
- Game Turok fix, reflections on the water were black.
- Added 640x480 and 800x600 equivalent resolutions for other aspect ratios
- 768x480, 1144x480, 960x600, 1064x600, 1400x600

- Widescreen patches for games
- Gta 2 (v10.3)
- Turok (Retail, not 3dfx rush version)
- Ignition (3dfx patch ver2 and ver3)
- MDK (retail + 3dfx patch + nocd)
- Driver (Retail + 2.1 patch + 2.1 fix)
- Diablo II retail + LOD expansion + patch v1.13d
- Additional HOR+ patched .exe for Aliens vs Predator Gold

Whats new?
2 bugfixes, additional x480 and x600 resolutions.

The main thing being additional widescreen patches for the games listed above!

You must match the version of the game to the patch or it wont work!!!
In the driver there is now a folder "WidescreenPatches", where you can get per-game information and additional files if needed.
Most games will work just from setting the Override resolution in the driver control panel. But some need additional setup.

For example Gta2 will require setting the resolution to 800x600, editing the resolution for the game in the registry and adding the .ini file next to the exe.
For some games there is an additional "wideDriver.ini", where you can tweak additional settings, like HUD scale and similar.

For Diablo II, I havent progressed that far into the game to see if it works everywhere, so fingers crossed!

Made a small update, removed the 120hz refresh cap in the driver, always thought that was a windows98 thing, but it was a limit in the 3dfx16vs.drv (also your monitor .inf must support it).

And since Im playing Diablo II a bit, updated the patch, mostly fixes for higher than x600 height resolutions, also videos are now upscaled fullscreen +bilinear, attacks/abilities are now moved further to the center, not anchored to the sides.

I wont make a new release, but you can always get the latest version if you download from the 3dfx_Wide_driver_98 repo.

Where's your guitar Dolenc? Because you absolutely rock sir!

I think my Pentium 4 and Voodoo 4 rig needs a go at this! Gotta get a ram patched Win98/ME going again.

I made an x3dfx Discord finally, if you or anyone else wants to join I'm sure the discussions, gaming, and networking opportunities will be plentiful. Linked your github there as well.

Im not really a community guy, but Ill make a patch here or there 😜

Think I caught everything Diablo II has, when going over x600 height resolutions, updated the files. Im at act 5, so I guess no more surprises.
Have to say, while Im not a fan of farming-loot-slot games, some parts of it is good enough that I kept returning to it. And act5 is reallly nice.

I also checked Diablo 1, which atmosphere is really nice and since I played the demo "back in the day" it instantly clicked with me.
I used Devilution (without the X) which is a reverse-engineering of the original game (and since its matching the file size of the original, guess they did a good job). Just added widescreen and compiled it so it runs on win98.

As far as a read, DevilutionX, so original with improvements, has plans to add 9x support and that would be a better option, but if anyone wants it I can upload the build somewhere.

I think Ill use 1400x600 for the playthrough, just a bit more in view, but still feels a bit clastrophobic.

I gotta say I'm stoked about what you've done for Diablo and D2 here. Thankyou Dolenc, your work is a constant in conversation around the community! Did you upload your widescreen Diablo somewhere?

Seeing all the "decompilation" projects people are doing online, Im playing a game for playstation 4 recompiled for pc, running on my linux machine, kinda amazing.

So I was thinking, if people can do that, maybe I can mange to reverse engineer the last 3dfx openGL ICD, so I gave it a go. "Reverse engineer a complete game in 45min!" my ass 😜. After about 2-3 weeks now I have a running version, about 99.8% identical to the original ICD. Some small chunks left, gl is complete, wgl is complete, sst is a few functions short and for texus (which isnt compiled with vc6) I just took it from glideXp project.

Still needs lots of cleanup and testing games and corrections, before I publish it somewhere. But it does run! Performance is identical to the v1.0.0.0761 ICD.

Currently its just a nice experiment. MesaFx is fairly ahead in later openGL support, ICD being only v1.1 and additional features. Though 3dfx ICD is still faster in some titles at 16bit. I will play with it a bit more, clean it up and make the code more human readable, not gHydra readable. And if it looks good, then Ill start adding to it to see where it goes 😀

Wow! Could this serve as a good starting point for creating something alternative to MesaFX?

Yea. The main benefit of MesaFx is, that its source code existed 😁, also compared to Glide, I found Mesas code to be closer to what Im used to, more readable. But lets see where this goes with time. So far it looks good, performance is mostly better, some issues I didnt even know existed, example in Oni the contrast is a bit washed out with MesaFx and on the 3dfx ICD it looks better.

Currently it runs every game I have installed on my system. There are already some incorrectness noticed, Quakespasm needed a small fix to get it running, depth buffer "optimized settings/hack" in the ICD also breaks it (disabled, fast, faster). Compressed texture support is also a bit unreliable on the icd. Also added current resolution options, and llm found quite a few code issues. Dont want to do any for now, just get the decompile finished first, so code is comparable, so I put it under a compile flag and I wrote it down in my notes.

But yea, in general if all goes well, think it will be a great ICD. Before just wasnt really an option 😀
