I've never used a computer older than the Dell Dimension 3000 I got when I was 10 that ran XP, but I really like early-mid 90s DOS games like Red Baron, and TIE, and I want to try Frontier Elite 2, so I got a 486 DX4 for my birthday recently and it's exactly what I needed - but I messed something up the other day and I have no clue how to fix it, and since I am new to vintage computers and computer hardware in general, I desperately need help so that my girlfriend doesn't find out she wasted $300 on something I ruined... THERE IS A TL;DR at the bottom.
When I got the 486 it had freeDOS installed along with a game and one floppy drive, and everything worked. The only things I've done to this so far are:
- replaced the ISA video card with a PCI card
- removed the hard drive a few times to use with a usb adapter on my linux pc
- removed the barrel CMOS battery that I'm pretty sure was dead anyway. Did not replace with a coin battery, so there's just no CMOS.
After I figured out how to get games to run well with turbo settings, everything worked perfectly. I then tried to install Windows 95b from a CD, and at first it said something was corrupted and couldn't install so I tried again later that night and it got all the way to where it restarts the PC, and when it booted up it said himem.sys was missing. Was able to get the file on it but then i got a bunch of other errors and it was asking for disks that I didn't have, so I got annoyed that I couldn't fix it and decided to format the drive and start over. I have a pc that can make win98 boot disks and figured i could boot the 486 with that and install win95 but now i can't use my cd drive (i assume because there are no drivers anymore) and i can't use the floppy drive.
I have tried 3 floppy drives, 2 of which previously were tested and worked fine, and all 3 have the LED on constantly and don't seem to spin up or do anything. I had never touched the floppy drive in the 486 before all of this, and it was working fine before so I doubt the cable was flipped but I tried it anyway and although the LED wasn't on, it still did nothing so I put the cable back the way it was. Now the 486 has been wiped and I'm unable to use the boot disk to do anything and I have no idea why. The floppy disk I used for the boot disk previously worked also. Oh and now I'm getting a disk boot failure message for some reason. I can provide screen shots or whatever else you need, I just really want to get this working again.
TL;DR
The floppy drive on my 486 stopped working after I formatted the drive with freeDOS and now the LED is constantly on even though the ribbon cables weren't touched. Now i can't use the command prompt or do anything at all with the pc.
PLEASE HELP.
