Hi,

I've used the LLM flavor of the week to decompile Mechwarrior 2/GBL and soon to be Mercs and rebuild it for Modern OSes (Linux, Mac, Windows). I've added new features like widescreen support, 8X AA, and you can select various late 90's 3D renderer looks (e.g. Matrox/S3/PowerVR - for Mech 2). GBL has a Dos/Titanium toggle.

I was clogging up an existing Mech 2 post, so we'll split this off to it's own.

https://github.com/BatMahn/MW2-Port
https://github.com/BatMahn/GBL-Port

MW2 is pretty close to done, a few bugs (and I need users to try it to report more)
GBL is pretty rough still, but should be cleaned up in a few weeks.

Post bugs on Github so we don't clog this post up with issues. I'll do my best to fix bugs.

Yes, its slop coded. But I think it works pretty well for a 30 year old game that builds on newer OSes. If Im breaking any rules here regarding AI/Slop, feel free to remove this.

Cheers.

If anything, if this is to be a general mech 2 engine compatibility platform, i also suggest looking at battlezone, but you need to gently ask the community with that because the source code they have needs permission to use.

My intent is to get over Mech2, GBL, and Mercs.

I might try Interstate 76 and Heavy Gear 1.. but will probably stop there.

Nice project and you support Linux too!
On my todo list I planned to write a compatibility patch for this game but now I can think about attacking another game project 😉
This project is a very good idea; this game deserves a second life on our modern systems. Keep up the good work!

Hey, not sure if you saw my PowerVR/PowerSGL wrapper, but feel free to use it to enable the PowerVR port with higher res textures etc: https://github.com/z2k-retro/pvr-sgl-wrapper/ … leases/tag/v0.1

I did see it, but no need.

The LLM went and grabbed the open sourced PowerVR driver and derived how the fog was created for the PowerVR version and recreates it. So you can have high resolution gameplay, with 3dfx textures and the PowerVR fog (that's whats labelled the "Enhanced" renderer in this port). Best of 3 worlds. 😀

legluondunet is DM'ing me about which tool used, but for some reason I can't reply?

I used Claude primarily for the heavy lifting (am trying ChatGPT for Mercs)To decomp the exe was only an hour or two. It probably took ~12 hours for it to generate me new code that would compile cleanly and launch into game.

Took ~2 weeks of back and forth with it going over various bugs and having it fully reverse engineer the original games logic/physics and the way early 3D video cards worked.

From what I understand, the older game the easier to decompile. But after ~1997 or so a lot of games started pulling in third party plugins/libraries for things like physics/sound, etc.. and all of those pieces would need to be done as well so those are an order of magnitude harder.

I'm probably still going to try Mech3 at some point.. since that one is also a bear to get running on newer PCs and doens't support anything other than Windows.

This whole thing started because I wanted to play Mech 2 on my M4 Macbook. Now I can.

Post screens or a video on his github. He was able to fix my reported issue perfectly.

Exactly this.. need more info. Screenshot if you can, maybe a screenshot of your game folder..

Nvidia 7600 isn't good enough to run it. It needs OpenGL 3.3. support, the 7600 tops out at 2.1

Future plans, I'm going to port it over to SDL3 which will do Vuklan/DX12/Metal. After that, I can look at back-porting it down to something like DX9.

Updated the main pages readme.. so it specifies minimum cards. After reading a bit more, an OpenGL 2.1 path is the way to go for older cards.. but I won't get that in for probably a week or two. I want to go SDL3 first.

In case anyone else wants a WASD keyboard setup and a (crappy) reference card mockup. I use a TKL keyboard, so no num-pad.

I want to try this but I'm stuck when it comes to the 'copy the contents of your install folder'. I don't have one and the installer won't run on x64 machines as people know. How do I install the game/create the install folder? Many thanks in advance and also for creating this, it's awesome.

Here's my "install" folder. Also an icon file if you like.
I used my DOSBOX install of Mechwarrior 2 to get all the needed installation files and was even able to load up my previous save game.
