SerdaVision - 8-bit ISA video card with HDMI output

An 8-bit ISA video card for IBM PC compatibles, from the 5150/XT to Pentium-class machines. A Raspberry Pi RP2350 functions as the video chip: it emulates the original hardware in firmware and outputs HDMI. One firmware file holds multiple video standards; the card runs one at a time, selected from DOS or with an on-screen menu.

Available for pre-order at https://serdashop.com/products/serdavision-hdmi

Video standards supported

  • VGA
  • EGA (256 KB)
  • CGA, Hercules, MDA
  • VGA-XT and EGA-XT for 8088/V20 machines
  • SVGA: VGA + VESA 1.2, up to 800x600x16 and 640x480x256, 320x200 hi-colour, optional ET4000 mode
  • Experimental: Plantronics ColorPlus, Olivetti PC1 (V6355D), Tandy 1000/PCjr, Hercules InColor

Specifications

  • Bus: ISA 8-bit, fits 8- and 16-bit slots, 4.77-8.33 MHz (12 MHz reported working)
  • Screen memory: up to 1.9 MB/s write and 1.5 MB/s read with zero-wait-state (0WS) on supporting chipsets such as the Intel 430HX; up to 1.1 MB/s without
  • Video memory: 256 KB, 320 KB with the VESA modes
  • Output: HDMI, 640x480 at 60/70 Hz, 800x600 at 56 Hz; analog VGA via a powered HDMI2VGA dongle
  • Settings, kept in flash: scanlines, phosphor colour, aspect, refresh, composite colour model (CGA)
  • Power from the slot or USB-C; firmware updates over USB-C

Limitations: 8-bit only; VGA/EGA text is 8 dots wide; mid-frame palette changes are not shown; no light pen.

Availability and price: see https://serdashop.com/products/serdavision-hdmi
Pre-orders will take 2-3 weeks to ship.
I have a few cards to ship directly, PM me if you want priority early access.

That looks really nice.

The ability to output direct composite video for CGA is the only thing not present that I would have liked to see on something like this. To be fair, I can imagine why that might have been deemed out of scope for the envisioned use cases.

looking good!
regarding the composite output, I believe it is already supported

here's a photo of my screen : Doom, with the on screen menu, scanlines set to 1/8
on screen menu is operated by a button on the bracket, or button connected to a header (you could use your turbo button or reset button as well if you like)

Awesome!

Video memory: 256 KB, 320 KB with the VESA modes

How do the VESA modes allocate the extra 64 kB on an 8 bit card? Is it taken from system memory?

No system RAM is used—it dedicates 320 KB of the RP2350’s internal SRAM for video, when needed.

Given how much interest there was in the CRT terminator, I'm honestly surprised this hasn't been getting more traction

You say 9x16 vs 8x16 or height 8x8. Text mode.
So it has MCGA text mode?

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.
PS. If I upload RAR, it is a 16-bit DOS RAR Version 2.50.

This board has been living rent-free in my head for a while and has given birth to a build idea.

So, if I do buy one, it will likely be for a "ship of Theseus" type build where I would want to combine it with a PicoGUS and as many newly made plugin substitutes for old hardware that are designed to conform to older standards and as few actual vintage/retro parts and components as possible and keeping it as modular as possible (everything in a single FPGA or running in emulation on an SOC would feel like cheating in this case).

That's a cool idea. I can't say I've ever seen anything like that before.

I can't afford to build such a thing any time soon, but my mind is going through all the possibilities now...

A modern-built retro motherboard (maybe something like this).
Some kind of hard drive sound simulator, like this.
GOTEK for floppy and maybe an IDE\CD emulator as well.
SerdaVision HDMI for video
As many modern ISA sound cards as you can find.
Put it all in a Silverstone FLP02.

... would be a very cool project. 😀

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

Yes: 8x16 (640x400, as MCGA) is the default, and 9x16 (720x400, as a real VGA) is a possible setting in the latest firmware.
so both are possible

All I need is time and money.

The former is harder to source than the latter.
