Hi all,

I've been going through testing all my old processors including a bunch of socket 478 Pentium 4s.

I also have these (see pictures) some of which appear to have the same pin grid as the socket 478 but some of which are slightly different, I think they may be laptop CPUs.

The one on the left is a Northwood 3.0GHz just for reference, which does work in my 478 motherboard.

So is it safe to try the others and are they likely to work?

Second one is 478, but the third is "479", so the second one, maybe, not sure if a desktop board will drive the correct voltage though, it is a laptop S478 CPU, 1.6GHZ FSB 400 for that one, and 1.2/1.3V

The middle one is a mobile CPU, so desktop board probably will run it at 1200MHz.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

In general, looking up the sSpecs of the CPUs give some good pointers to what they are:

If it's dual it's kind of cool ... 😎
