Howdy folks,

So Big AI may or may not be dying/problematic/lame/evil/smelly etc etc, if you've got opinions on that, take it to one of the numerous other threads on the topic. This here is about crafting tools. Not the most expensive up to date tools that soak up 10s of thousands of dollars that you can jack off to, more like beating old bits and pieces from the workshop into a different shape. Remember the dickheads you meet everywhere else on teh interwebs that insist you can't possibly even think of playing a game until you have a wraparound 8k monitor a 5090, 48 core CPU and enough lights for Vegas? Don't be like that with this.

How marginal is the hardware? I will initially be working with GPU that have 8GB, OpenCL, Vulkan 1.2, that's it, no matrix acceleration. Small matrices are supposed to accelerate better on general GPU compute than they do on custom HW support anyway. Later, MUCH later, do not be pushing for this, it's about experience and comfort zone, I may have a model on my more modern laptop with more advanced but very middling GPU.

I am more in the realm of "If the printer makes a noise you don't recognize, shoot it" class of wayward tech paranoia, I won't have smart speaker Echo/Alexa type devices here, to pay for big tech to bug my own house, and will not buy the current form of "Smart TV" as it's smarts are not for your benefit. Therefore first step is figuring out what kind of containerisation or virtualisation I can use, keep it in it's own padded cell with limited access. Another consideration for that is so I can move the whole thing wholesale and also mess with different models on the same machine and switch them up.

So the only game in town for this for virtualisation with any sliver of efficiency seems to be full GPU passthrough, which appears to mean I will need to use chipset graphics to administer the machine. I am not very familiar with such setups. I get the "exclusive use of GPU" thing, but not clear on the mechanics. Can I freeze the VM and use the GPU for something else? Or would I have to quit out of VM entirely? Or does it mean you can't have the host OS install drivers or use GPU at all before you launch VM even?

Then also I am trying to figure the bare minimum RAM I could get away with for that, figuring something like 8GB for the host OS, then minimal guest OS needs 4GB plus the software overhead 4g? Plus the size of the model you want to run. Let's say bare minimum one model would be 8GB, so 24GB RAM I am thinking to support single 8GB GPU.... though it would seem you have to have system RAM to match per GPU for total model footprint with multi GPU, i.e. add another 8GB GPU, need another 8GB system. Two years ago, you'd have been thinking "just throw ALL the RAM at it" but yeah, it's hard to scrape up for cheap now so trying to work to minimums.

Thus would containerisation be the more RAM efficient approach or not? Not sure what kind of overheads and restrictions that brings in, and again don't know enough about it.

I haven't even mentioned what I want to get into really. I am thinking of something like Qwen for indexing all the tech docs and books I have pdfs of, with natural language query. Then something like Phi for actually putting tech knowledge to use, and maybe LLama or GPT4All for general purpose "rubber duck" noodling around ideas... That's what I am thinking I should be able to run from reading around sites like https://everylocalai.com/ with selecting the low RAM requirement.

Stretch goal, when two are three are trained independently would be to have speech to text query frontend and be able to use them in their own areas of (in)competence like a StarTrek computer or JARVIS etc. Maybe also co-operate with independent home automation and security systems.

Anyway, there's a lot to know and figure out, so just trying to get basics down for beginning to mess with this stuff.

I first thought of the OnlyFans site when reading the title. Not that I'm really familiar with it outside of hearing it being popular for posting naughty material (and that you have to pay for access).

Oh well, never mind me, moving on...

🤣 me too.

BTW UCyborg I'm a fan of your work on Interstate '76. Sorry to threadjack but I'm not allowed to send DMs. I was recently using chatgpt to examine your patch to see what your work could teach me about the game. You will be credited in my next release. Thanks.

Aww man, this subject generated a dense cloud of TLAs and tech terms real quick. But from what I can pick out of this
https://www.xda-developers.com/moe-models-cha … asnt-caught-up/
and this
https://www.xda-developers.com/i-replaced-cha … this-local-llm/

It seems like I wanna head down that route of using a Linux Container (LXC) and setting up models with the MOE flag.

The problem with saying "old GPU" here is that 2019 up were already feeling the semiconductor supply chain shortage and got cheaped out on RAM with the result that VRAM bandwidths in 2019-2023 are kind of sucky. Thus AI Bros cringe at "old GPU" because of the immediately prior generation bandwidth limitations. Whereas, going back to 1080 and the same era cards that I have they are up above 500GBps so while core might not be quite as advanced the bottlenecks are less necky. I am kinda avoiding mentioning the exact model before someone has an OCD sulk fit over "too old". So I could say, imagine that I got RX5500s with 8GB so you could think they were only JUST out of date, but in fact are R9 390s... that aren't really much slower. So yeah, depending on how you ask the question AIs embedded in every websearch now will tell you you can't do anything with them and of course someone will quote that at me as if it was gospel truth and act like it's a personal insult if I reject it. Actually through asking 3 times in different ways, I found out that even older GPUs may be useful in different areas of AI that lean more on OpenCL than CUDA or Vulkan.

Anyway, bit of a difference here between what will run at a useable speed, pretrained, as these are, somewhat. I want them to give them more info on stuff I want them to know though so extra training will be resource heavy. But, seems possible that you could glom any bunch of spare GPU together and get something out of them if the work can be parcelled out more. Heh, I am thinking about fixing that cracked 1050 now.

Well shit, what I am really trying to figure is whether to stick 3xR9 390 in one machine or only 2 and have one in another machine, given either is RAM limited to 32GB but may only get 24GB due to availability. Buuuut, it seems possible that the MoE approach would let me use the model on a 2nd machine with R9-295X in which would let 3x390 box chug away on stuff. Guess I need to look at Docker too for running models in on machines I am actually trying to do tasks on also... either that or I'm just RDPing into the main box... IDK swings and roundabouts.

Still riffing...

So this is the business end..
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llama.cpp
and I want something like LM Studio for loading shit
on what.
So ubuntu gets recommended for being the most up to date for nVidia drivers for AI, BUT they have screwed me over before by abandoning an LTS version 2 years in, and they apparently shit the bed on late security updates recently. So hmmm.. devil you know or ... Arch linux versions, Arch is meant to be more AMD friendly... and more agile, but more in need of full updates more frequently.. but there are distros based on it that are AI focussed, might be plug and pray? IDK
There's also a devil I kinda know in a Gnoppix distro, which I may just get to screw round with before I commit too much drive to anything, just run pre-baked shit to familiarise.

That's quite a wall of text...TL;DR version pretty please? 😁

There's this subreddit that you might want to take a look at called LocalLLaMA, plus there's another one called LowEndLocalAI that concentrates more specifically on low end hardware.

Anyway, I'm testing local LLMs with a nothing but an old FX-8320E (no GPU!) so it is certainly possible to use potato tier hw for this. Just set your expectations accordingly 😁
Qwen3.5-4B is the one I've been using the most but there are others. LFM series might be good if you want small size and speed.

With GPUs, memory bandwidth and size of VRAM is what matters the most so old GPUs aren't all that useful. 4GB or less might be enough for some visual or speech models, idk.

Thanks for the links, the first has a pretty good wiki that I will be picking through. The second, seems mostly about benchmarking?? I guess the search function might bring up what you can expect to achieve with older stuff, but recent posts seem to be dickswinging for bigger ticket hardware.

Yeah about VRAM speeds, I was trying to say it hasn't gone up much in midrange or older top end you might call midrange now in years. Such that some cards as old as 2015 have as fast RAM as a 3060 say. Also I suspect latency isn't that great on newer stuff either. But size is drawback more on older cards.

Did you use AI to write all this? 🤣. The OnlyFans title and wall of text are extremely odd. You just want lightweight llms?

You know even if BW didn't have their location listed I would still know exactly where they hail from ...only a Canuk could talk this verbosely sounding like they have a thesaurus on tap and yet somehow be as amusing as possible.

Must be a Canadian thing.

This forum needs an offtopic tag. Sorry, BitWrangler, didn't mean to derail the topic...

I started revising the patch for Interstate '76, basically just undoing some hacks that weren't helpful and redirecting memory allocations that are using default heap to separate heap to decrease bad effects (crashing) due to memory corruption. At least it didn't seem to corrupt nGlide eventually anymore.

I just got fed up with everything when I was going to go and compare the EXE to the old one to see if I missed anything and then at the fact that I'd have to do everything again for the expansion executable. That was over 1,5 years ago and I haven't touched it since.

I'm generally very slow any never developed true proficiency when it comes to anything involving code (or other things in life). And at this point, I wonder if it's even worth the bother. Someone apparently somehow constructed the compilable and workable source code for MechWarrior 2 executable with help of AI and hinted that they may try Interstate '76 at some point.

Well, maybe it still is worth the bother hacking original executable, for being closest to original or retro authentic if nothing else.

In any case, Interstate '76 discussion is probably better off resumed in a separate topic.

Is it wordy? I don't think I've hit a couple of thousand yet. Given that I might also be posting elsewhere on the web a few times a day and can type pretty quickly I might have exceeded the combined output of Agatha Christie and Stephen King in ~30 years. Therefore I may have "Agent Smith"-ed AI already. 🤣

Trashbytes, thanks I think.

Its a compliment 🤣, I don't know if you have ever watched a YouTuber called AvE ..he has a similar manner with words, a few other Canuks I watch also have a way with words . .they seem to be able to make them flow like water in a river.

Truly entertaining to watch.
