Have you tried using the mscdex /L: switch ? It specifies the drive letter you want to assign the first CD-ROM drive.
Try: LH C:\WINDOWS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:OPTICAL /L:E

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

get VIDECDD.SYS and place into c:\drivers folder
Add the following:

Config.sys:
===
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DRIVERS\VIDECDD.SYS /D:MSCD001

Autoexec.bat:
===
MSCDEX /D:MSCD001

This worked for me. From Philscomputerlab

These are my config files ran as *.pif in win98 under advanced tab, which reboots my pc in real dos mode as per philscomputerlab and a few tweaks:
NOTE: I know mouse driver isnt there, havent got that working yet but no need to atm as i use keyboard for the games i'm playing atm...

This line looks incorrect

LH C:\WINDOWS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:OPTICAL

It should be

LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:OPTICAL

If, aditionally you want to specify the drive letter you can add /L: at the end

LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:OPTICAL /L:E

Never see such strange things but you can try to make one more .bat file something like cd-drive.bat

mscdex /D:optical /E

and run it from autoexec.bat with

call cd-drive.bat

Need help? Begin with photo and model of your hardware 😉

I never had to "optical" - always worked with simple/basic optiong.

You could also try "SHSUCDX" - also worked well for me.

I see "Sound Blaster" lines in your config ... you're not by chance using an SB drive or the connector on an old SB card?

IIRC: The SB stuff looked like IDE but wasn't

Ensure your Autoexec.bat contains 0x0D/0x0A as line ends and not just 0x0A.

Is autoexec finding it...

Goto: C:\

Dir/s mscdex.exe

Note the full path

Put that in AITOEXEC line

The /D variable is completely arbitrary, you can call it BANANA or anything else and it works just as well, so long as you use the same name in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT

completely arbitrary as long as you do not use any of the already reserved devicename words.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

Ok, makes sense and seems vaguely familiar.

I was thinking you memt "optical" was a special keyword ... it really has been years.

I think I only have two DOS systems left with CD - and I've not had to configure them in a ... L O N G - T I M E ...

Is there any output from mscdex saying no device found, or is there no indication that mscdex is running in the first place? Are there any "Bad command or file name" messages that appear during startup?

There is one error in autoexec, "PATH C:\WINDOWS" should be "SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS", unsure if it would cause the problem though

ok i rewrite the autoexec :

SET SOUND=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P300 E620 T6
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0
SET CTCM=C:\WINDOWS
C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND\AWEUTIL /S
LH C:\WINDOWS\MSCDEX.EXE\ /D:MSCD001
LH C:\WINDOWS\CTMOUSE.EXE /R2:E

now im finally getting an error message.
weird thing is i even copy the mscdex to windows as well.
