'File not found'

You have a trailing slash. That tells dos you are looking for a directory named mscdex.exe. (yes, directories can have extensions)

Remove the trailing slash.

Disc drive not working from startup:
A dumb question:

Is there sufficient UMB to load the atapi and mscdex files high?

Sometimes this kind of thing happens when there is not.

As a diagnostic step, try loading them low. See if the issue goes away.

If it does, look into modifying load order, or at using LH black magic to specify the UMB region to use when loading high, to better fit these files to memory locations.

ok i rewrite the autoexec :

SET SOUND=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P300 E620 T6
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0
SET CTCM=C:\WINDOWS
C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND\AWEUTIL /S
LH C:\WINDOWS\MSCDEX.EXE\ /D:MSCD001
LH C:\WINDOWS\CTMOUSE.EXE /R2:E

now im finally getting an error message.
weird thing is i even copy the mscdex to windows as well.

Read the information it's giving you, it has MSCDEX.exe/ and it saying file not found. Get rid of the slash, and fix your path if necessary.

i rewrite the autoexec like this

SET SOUND=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P300 E620 T6
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0
LH MSCDEX /D:OPTICAL
SET CTCM=C:\WINDOWS
C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND\AWEUTIL /S
LH C:\WINDOWS\CTMOUSE.EXE /R2

everything its working great now, i just couldnt make the redbook audio of quake1 works on dos but works on windows so its not the cable

Iirc, win98 does digital audio extraction for cdaudio, where dos relies on analog mixing in the soundcard.

It's not finding MSCDEX.EXE in C:\WINDOWS

Go to : C:\ <root>
and do:

C:\> dir/s MSCDEX.EXE

The output should include something like: something like:

Directory of {?????} <=note what this is!

1998-02-27 08:11 AM 24,881 MSCDEX.EXE

Then change your LH line to:

LH {?????}\MSCDEX.EXE\ /D:MSCD001

Ok, LH is finding MSCDEX.EXE in your path.

You could type> PATH
to see what directories are in your path - it must be in one of them (or maybe it's in the root)
