Hello!

I've tried searching what feels like everywhere including on here for this issue but can't seem to find anything, other than one old forum post with the same issue on an XP system, but without any further replies or solution.

I have a Windows 98se retro setup, and just recently got a Roland SC-55 to use for MIDI music in all the classic games, works perfectly with DOOM, Heretic, Tritryst etc no problems. It's connected to a Soundblaster 128 PCI, so the MIDI/MPU401 port on that soundcard.

No matter what I do, the setup of Dark Forces (iMUSE / setup) just freezes when attempting to test music after choosing instrument and port, nothing happens and it has to be force closed, and so launching the game does not work either then as it won't get past initializing I'm guessing. I've tried different port numbers too, not that I think it should be anything different than 330 if I've understood everything correctly, and it happens when choosing both General MIDI and Roland instrument.

Anyone have any ideas what could fix this? It's basically the same problem that occurs if you were to test something that isn't supported, connected or incorrect port, wrong soundcard/instrument, then the audio setup also freezes. Default OP4 / Adlib works just fine, as that is the Soundblaster handling it then. But DOOM's DOS setup and every other game I've tried so far correctly picks it up from both General MIDI or Sound Canvas on port 330.

Appreciate any help!

Is it possible that your Win98 system is running too fast? I recall Sam & Max with a SC55 freezing on my P133 unless I disabled one of the caches to bring it down to 486 speed. That game also uses iMUSE, so it might be a problem with that.

This post is by another member who encountered the iMUSE freeze with Sam & Max:
