Well I'm not sure, it doesn't show anything after I type the "mount" command, it just has the "Z:\>" with the flashing cursor ready for me to type something else. I followed the instructions from this page:

I can get into the game, but it shakes around so I obviously haven't completed the dosbox installation properly. Any suggestions?

If you have c:\games\descent and you do "MOUNT C C:\GAMES" in Dosbox, then C:\ in Dosbox is c:\games\ and c:\descent in Dosbox is c:\games\descent. When you do "C:\>CD GAMES" in dosbox, you're trying to change directory to c:\games\games, which doesn't exist - you should "C:\>CD DESCENT" instead.

Also, use the latest Dosbox version: 0.72.

Since you mounted your games folder as your c: drive, when you change to c: you are already in the games folder.

Read my 60 Seconds Guide to DOSBox (and don't just read it - follow it too).

If that doesn't help, come back with details on how you mounted your C and D drives, how you did the install, how you configured sound, music etc.

Reading the aptly named README file will be a good idea too.

ok, thanks very much for that, I'll follow the instructions to the letter and let you know how I go. (And I did read the README file, like I said, this is all very new to me)

I did everything it said to do but when I typed Install after D:\>, it replied with "Error: no cd-rom driver detected. Unable to continue with install." I checked my driver (TSST corp CD/DVD SH-S182D) it appears to be fine and also said it didn't need updating when I tried that. Is there anywhere I can go from here? 🙁

Post the exact steps you did and exactly what you typed.

I created a folder called "Dos Games" and a folder inside that called Game".
Then I did this in DOSBox

Thanks, I think that worked, now I have a screen in DOSBox that says C:\GAMES\DESCENT> I tried pressing enter but it just displayed it again. Is there something extra I'm supposed to type in here?

And sorry for the double post, my browser said the connection failed but it obviously went through anyway.

Thanks, that seemed to work, except I got an
"ERROR: Unable to open the file C:ULTRASND\ULTRASND.INI"
and
"ERROR (HMI) Specified driver is not loaded"

The game opened up and asked me to select a pilot name, but there was no sound (maybe because I selected the wrong soundcard option) but the game was only in the small DosBox, is there any way it can be played in a larger screen, and do I follow these steps each time it's played?

Ok, now I know that I can alt-enter to get a larger screen, but I'm still not sure why there's no sound.

I changed the music card and I was just racing around the old mines with no problems and great music for the first time in years! Thank you so much to everyone who helped me when I was so terribly incompetent, I appreciate it a lot! 😊
