I tried to make Down in the Dumps run on Windows XP. Although it did run, the sound was choppy and seemed to be hanging once in a while.

I used VDMSound 2.04, with VDM Launchpad 1.0.0.7.

Can anybody give me some help how to solve this problem ?

No, we can't, since you gave us no system specifications.
Also, you are using an old version of VDMS (get update2).

Yes, it’s my fault.

Doesn't help matters that it's not a common title and there are no demos available. I do know that it needs a 486 (so DosBox is out) and DOS VESA support (so Video card compatibility is imperative).

Also, be aware that you might not be able to improve performance. There are a number of DOS titles that simply will not run smoothly on an NT OS. It all depends on how the original game was programmed.
