Maybe a timing-sensitive issue. Not much to do to fix that, I'm afraid. Maybe CTBPPAT will fix it.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Might help to describe your hardware. It would also help to identify the game you are trying to run.

Error 07 is Microsoft's error code for "Out of Memory". Go at it, boys.

*ack* Can hardly find any info about this "Xian Jian Qi Xia Zhuan". The only page with a lot of info was all in Chinese. Can you confirm that this is a DOS game, not a Windows game?

From the images on this page, it's either a Windows game or a SVGA DOS game. SVGA could complicate matters...

I don't suppose anyone could find a demo available for download? Size wouldn't matter...

u can download the game from ...

Hrmm...Looks like the "full" version, as opposed to a demo. Since I can't read any Chinese, I can't tell...

The install program bombed out with a runtime 200 error, fixed it with ctbppat.

I can't figure the INSTALL program at all. I don't suppose you could translate this for me?

I couldn't figure out the install/setup program, so I just ran VDMSound on PLAY.BAT and it ran fine. The intro screen was silent, but at the first "choice" screen the music (MIDI) started, and I can confirm that digital sound effects worked as well.

I did notice this message popping up when starting the game:
Check CD-ROM .... in J:
Free 49984 bytes
XMS= 919 k
FM ...... OK
Voice ... OK

You might try this: Start up a command prompt, make it full-screen (Alt+Enter), type DOSDRV to start VDMSound, then type this to start the game:
PAL.EXE >MEM.TXT

Quit as soon as possible and post your results from the MEM.TXT file. Please note, I do NOT have a CD-ROM drive on J: , so I'm not so sure about that part...

Also, try typing MEM /C and post what results you get from that.

Also, do you know what this sub-menu from the install program is saying? I'm guessing that 570k is the conventional memory requirement, that 830k is the XMS requirement; and 623k/31648k are what it "sees" available on my PC.

err, is that a text-mode SETUP program?

Then copy and paste the text over to a WordPad window (because Notepad doesn't support more than one language at a time, I think) and then paste into a Chinese-English translation program or online machine translation service like Babelfish or ArcNet (when it is online again, that is)

That should at least get you through until Unregistered posts again.

It simply can't be text mode. 😀

Wonder if there's a Chinese equivilant of JWPce (like CWPce?) I don't think I could use JWPce to identify those characters since actually Japanese and Chinese characters have evolved a bit differently over the years.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Not that I know of.

For a Chinese word processor, see:
http://www.njstar.com
http://www.twinbridge.com
(both are shareware, have free demos)

I wonder what sort of output JWPce would give? It would be interesting if you would try.

We're still waiting for the Unregistered to reply...

If you were desperate enough, you could search for Chinese-English OCR software and run on the images. (Boy, think of all the opportunities for error there!!!)

Hmm, you'd probably have to convert to 300dpi 8-bit greyscale first, though. AND pray that the OCR software can recognize it.

Boy, that would be fun!

Actually it would have to be 1-bit, and the resolution doesn't matter.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Ok, that is significantly smaller than mine, but I'm still not sure if that is the cause of the problem.

btw i can't get 2 the install screen u attached

Like I said before:
The install program bombed out with a runtime 200 error, I fixed it with ctbppat.

You still haven't told us what message you receive at the start of the game: Start up a command prompt, make it full-screen (Alt+Enter), type DOSDRV to start VDMSound (the non-GUI part of it), then type this to start the game:
PAL.EXE >MEM.TXT

Quit as soon as possible and post your results from the MEM.TXT file.

What happened? While testing, I lost all audio, then got back digital audio (MIDI still missing). Bizarre.

Well, thanks, but there is still plenty of "mystery" about this title. Stay in touch.
