The game installs fine, and the sound tests work, but when I try to run it it just gives me some memory numbers and quits.
My mounting commands are:
mount c d:\
mount d e:\ -t cdrom

Try playing with memory options. I would start by disabling EMS and UMBs.
Intel i7 5960X
Gigabye GA-X99-Gaming 5
8 GB DDR4 (2100)
8 GB GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (Gigabyte)
they sell it on gog.com with dosbox. So it definetly works. I didn't check how they set it up though.

The game doesn't have EMS enabled in the memory options.
What are UMBs?
Well, it's definitely having some memory issues. I tried to install it with "full moves" and it said I didn't have a drive with that much space available, even though the drive I was installing it on 73 GB of free space, thousands if not millions of times more space than Descent II requires. I installed it with the next highest option and it won't run.
you might want to familiarize yourself with the readme of DOSBox.
it contains lot's of useful information.
It doesn't include the basic difference between hard drive storage space and memory though, but that should be findable on the internet

lookup -freesize in the readme.
