copy the file dosbox-0.73.conf to there
and modify the shortcut to dosbox and add
-conf dosbox-0.73.conf (possibly adding the fullpath to it in front)

thx, this works. But why don't you write the conf file to the installation dir of dosbox by default? This is much easier I think?
Users can't edit the dosbox.conf in the DOSBox folder unless they know about editing permissions (not very likely) or they are logged in as administrator (which they shouldn't be).
Besides written data shouldn't be stored with the program if not necessary.
You don't need the -conf switch if you name the file dosbox.conf.

If I do that, will using the "edit configuration" shortcut in the start menu also use this new conf file in the installation folder of dosbox or will it create a new one in documents and settings (the default) again?
the shortcut will be broken then
