Ive been a little flustered from the support ive been getting here lately. Some responses have been useful, mostly being from users, while others have not been the same story. Ive been trying to get back into my DOS games, though im pretty inept on the workings of DOS, so I posted 2 threads here for help. In one, I was met by someone I assume to be an admin who apparently never learned the true meaning of Christmas, judging by how rude he was. In the other, my thread was locked by another admin because I referred to my games as "abandonware," while I was still very much in need of help. So I suppose my continued support of these forums really hinges on the support I get from this question.

Anyways, like I stated earlier, I had been working with my DOS games, trying to get them to work, when suddenly I see that my computer has lost 7 gigs of memory, and prior to that, I recall having a few more mysteriously disappear. The only thing ive been doing with my computer since then was messing with my DOS games (mostly Elder Scrolls arena). I mounted and remounted these games several times, so Im wondering if DOSbox somehow saves the information from these mounts somewhere, or something along those lines. My current method of mounting a file is by dragging the batch or exe file over the DOSbox icon, so I didnt know if that might have anything to do with it.

Im running windows Vista on a Toshiba satellite laptop, and I started with DOSbox version 0.72 at the beginning of my workings, then moved to 0.73 towards the middle of it. Any help on the subject would be GREATLY appreciated.

DOSBox is incapable of doing those things. It does not save mountings. And even if it did, it would have no effect on your disk space. (I assume you mean disk space, rather than RAM [which is what is commonly referred to as memory] ). Whatever it is that is using up that much disk space, it isn't DOSBox. More likely, it's something like the System Restore option (or worse: some horrid turgid crap installed by many laptop producers) making a snapshot, or some big files in your temp directory.

And yes, Abandonware is a forbidden subject here. It is illegal and we don't want that here. Besides that, the very fact that those games are not original copies but have been altered or at the very least pre-installed is often the very source of the problem and we have better things to do that diagnose every bad copy of a game out there. When you need help with abandonware, go elsewhere, as you won't get it here (and your thread will be locked to prevent any semblance of impropriety).

Well, the fact is, "abandonware" in itself is a very broad term, and not all definitions of it are illegal. I was using it in the general term, but the fact remains that the acquisition of the games in question was very much legal, and im not partial to having my thread locked because an admin was quick to make the assumption. Anyways, I suppose thats not the sort of thing to be discussed here, so Ill end that conversation. As far as the lost disk space is concerned, I haven't got a clue as to what did it, but ive been meaning to wipe my hard drive for a while now, so i guess it doesn't really matter. Thanks for the help.

There is NO whatsoever abandonware, there exists freeware (denoted as
such by the copyrightholder), copyrighted games (they are NOT allowed to
be arbitrarily copied even if they're ancient) and other forms like shareware etc.

I was using it in the general term, but the fact remains that the acquisition of the games in question was very much legal.

Write an explanation to the one who locked the thread and he may unlock it
if you are using an original game.

Regardless of anyone's personal opinions on it, it is the policy of this site that abandonware will neither be officially endorsed nor supported. This is for the safety of the site, as it would be an obvious detriment to the community for it to be shut down as a result of legal threats. It is expected that those who wish to participate in this community will be mature and understanding enough to respect that.

As for your question, I also doubt DOSBox unless you are trying to have it capture lots of audio/video or something (which it doesn't do by default). I would suggest:

- uninstalling anything from Windows Add/Remove Programs you don't want or use
- running CCleaner to remove temporary files from your system
- using Spybot S&D and a reputable virus scanner to check for malware on your system

You can also have Windows search for large and/or recently-created/modified files.
