VOGONS

I just found out about this software and am already pretty excited. So far I have Silent Hunter and Dark Forces up without a hitch, and Pacific Air War on its way.

PAW recognizes my joystick (Saitek X45 w/ pedals), and plays some sounds already.

The basic outline is that PAW, in its configuration menu, has three options for sound: 'Game Sound On/Off,' 'Music On/Off,' and 'Digital Sound On/Off.'

The first two seem to be working fine, but the 'Digital' sound is not. Without it turned on, all sounds go through the 'Game Sound' option, and I can then hear the gunfire, but it is a wimpy little 'tick, tick' and seems to be a bit out of sync.

I have tried various settings in game and in VDM, but am pretty new to this so far. I have also tried changing the game and VDM setup between SB, SB Pro, SB Pro2, and SB16.

PS, In the past, I once tried running PAW natively in Win98 (w/o rebooting into DOS mode). It displayed identical symptoms. Running from DOS mode fixed it then, but is not an option now on XP.

Any clues? I'd much appreciate it.

I basically have the same responses as yourself, except my Digital sound is on. You're certain these should be digital effects? Explosions and machine gun fire can be heard, they're just not digital.

One oddity I noticed was that the port address is the only info it asks for, normally the IRQ is the most critical setting. Attempting to run Win98SE resulted in silence (or a lock-up).

Any clues?

By chance, was there an ISA sound card on that machine?

Here is a readme.txt related to modified file in PAW. I f someone is interested, i can upload it. It doesn't work on my XP pro system but it allowed me to play the game normally (with all sounds) under Win 98.

DSOUND.FT 7,404 01-26-95 10:15a

This is an updated digital sound driver for PAW 1942 from MicroProse,
provided by the MicroProse Sound Department. This version requires PAW Gold,
the PAW Scenario disk, or the ver 1.4 update. It will NOT work on the
original game! If you are not currently having problems with the digital
speech and sound effects in PAW, you do not need this update.

Our drivers normally check first for correct DMA operation before starting
to play sounds. This check sometimes fails on some clone sound cards and
others that require an emulator TSR, so it has been disabled in this
version.

To use: rename the DSOUND.FT file in your 1942 directory to DSOUND.OLD then
copy this new driver to your 1942 directory. No other changes should be
necessary.

If a DigiSpeech Port*able sound is being used, please make sure you are
using the latest version of BMASTER, dated at least 07-09-94 or later.
