I can't seem to save any games while playing dungeon hack.
I keep getting

Error: Couldn't open savegame directory for reading
last message = 0
last object = 2007
last event = 0
C:\dungeon~1>

and i get the same thing when loading a game

dungeon~1 looks very un-DOSBox like.

Install the game from within DOSBox and choose a short name for its folder.

Intel i7 5960X
Gigabye GA-X99-Gaming 5
8 GB DDR4 (2100)
8 GB GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (Gigabyte)

Read my 60 Seconds Guide to DOSBox (and don't just read it - follow it too).

If that doesn't help, come back with details on how you mounted your C and D drives, how you did the install, how you configured sound, music etc.

Reading the aptly named README file will be a good idea too.

i mount the c drive with the commands

mount c C:\dosprog\

then change over to it via

C:

i ran the sound program within in the folder in dosbox (i was having the issue before doing this)

I haven't done anything with the D drive (if your referring to my CD drive)

Read ElPusher's reply, especially the first part of that sentence.

Dungeon Hack works fine if installed correctly. Please show ALL commands you are entering in DOSBox to install the game, including mounting an A: drive and running the install program. I could tell you how to fix the problem without installing, but it appears you are using a downloaded copy that doesn't go through normal installation, and these forums do not support that.

I do have the CD, i bought it at a convention YEARS ago when i was a kid. I've sense lost the CD (I have bought it legally but meh, lost it)

but i mount the drive with

mount c "C:\dosprog\"
C:

then i try to install it with the command "install" and i get the above error saying to move to the directory with the game.

I can run the game by just typing
hack

but i can't save or load games

With the floppy version you run SOUND.EXE to configure the sound, and INSTALL.EXE is only for first-time installation; but maybe the CD version is different in that regard.

The game has a folder called SAVEGAME under the main game folder where it keeps information about save points, and that folder needs a few valid files in there. For example, the floppy installer places 8 files in the folder initially, and I can recreate the same kind of error you're getting by deleting those files and then trying to save or restore in the game. So, if you don't have valid files in the SAVEGAME folder, you'll have to re-install to create them.

Ahh! Thanks for the idea! I managed to find some proper save files of the game (apparently the ones i had where messed up). Now the game is saving and loading just fine. Ahh this brings back some good memories. Now if i can just find that old stash of CD's ...
