Hi all.

I've been playing Daggerfall for a few weeks and having a blast with the game, but I got at the end of the main line and I'm hopelessly stuck. I retrieved the Totem from Castle Daggerfall, gave it to the Underking's agent, and I can't proceed any further. According to every walkthrough I've checked Nulfaga is supposed to contact me immediately after I hand over the Totem, but she hasn't, and if I go to her the game won't let me speak to her. I tried reloading an older save and giving the Totem to someone else, with the same result. I tried waiting a year game-time and nothing happens either. I feel really frustrated being so close to the end yet unable to continue or even find out what went wrong.

I'm using the 2.13 patch. I tried FIXSAVE on a game just before and after giving away the Totem. According to walkthroughs I checked I've done everything required to be able to proceed. If anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate them 😢

Alternatively if someone if someone has a saved game from just before or after getting the Totem that would be great. I don't mind having to use a different character so long as I can finish the game without restarting from scratch (and even then there's no guarantee I won't run into the same problem again).

That is frustrating!

But few points before proceeding:

1. Are you using the full CD version?

2. Are you playing it in a Pure DOS environment or under emulation like dosbox or vdmsound?

3.What is your system specs?

The only way I think that you can complete the game without adding in another character savegame, is to copy the whole dagger directory and play in another system.

Other workaround is to try slowing down the cpu cycles if in Dosbox or slowdown the whole system via bios using the multiplier option, if available.

Still other minor things to consider :

a.)Try downloading the latest patch from another source. RE-patch after saving your character and try again.

b.)Go to another town. Save there. Quit Game. Restart and Load the save and come back to meet Nulfaga.

c.)Play in a friend's machine and save the game just after acknowledging with Nulfaga. Try if it's possible.

d.)I've run out of ideas. You're on your own from here on. 😁

P.S. Do tell us how (if) you managed to solve this problem. Such obscure information will always come in handy.

Here's some more information:
1. I'm using the full CD version (not Bethesda's free download)
2. I'm playing in DOSBox 0.72
3. I have an Intel E8400, 4Gb RAM, Windows XP SP3, Radeon 4870 1Gb.

I tried your suggestions (I moved the folder to another computer and ran it from there, ran it in pure DOS in a virtual machine, reinstalled the game with and without the patch, moved and waited and saved before trying to speak to Nulfaga). Nothing seems to work. But thanks anyway, they were good suggestions 😀

I posted on the Bethesda forums as well like swaaye suggested. It does seem to be an incredibly obscure problem though because I haven't found any mention of it anywhere else. If I even manage to solve it I'll post a solution here.

Try to run it in ABSOLUTELY PURE DOS Machine...not the Virtual Machine, if you have accessability to it, with dos sound drivers using a dos compatible hardware.

I doubt this will solve this problem but it's still worth a try.

And, also try downloading Daggerfall, since it's now made free by Bethesda itself, and try continuing your journey from there.

Also, try the penultimate patch, not the latest if it's not working or even a few patches before that.

And I rest my case. 😅

Good Luck! 😁

Figured out what the problem was. I forgot to mention I was using DFQFIX, an unofficial patch that fixes dozens of bugs in the game. Unfortunately it also introduces one bug, and it's this one bug that I hit. There's a version of DFQFIX that was released just today (talk about timing!) that fixes the issue, unfortunately it seems it'll only work with starting a new game. Oh well.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind. (DFQFIX).

Oh it's definitely a must-have, as long as they've fixed this bug. The other fixes that it contains make playing the game much more enjoyable and it makes some previously impossible to finish quests actually doable. But I'd wait a few days to hear confirmation before starting a new game with it 😉

BTW, where do you download the latest version of that patch?

From the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Page. Go to the Daggerfall sections, scroll down to the Files subsection and it'll be there.

As for if it's finally completable... I'll let you know tonight 😁

It really is amazing how poorly written the old Bethesda games are. Their Terminator games from the same era (using the same engine) are just as bad.

On the other hand, the Unofficial Oblivion patch fixes like thousands of bugs or something so maybe they haven't changed. And it's not like Oblivion doesn't crash from time to time.

Yeah, I dont know how players back then were able to play the game at all.

Oblivion nowadays crashes for me on a new c2d pc with a x19xx ATI card either when alt-tabbing to the desktop and when exiting the game. On an older p4 computer with a 6200 gforce it only crashes with the alt-tab thing. I read that that unofficial patches did fix thousands of bugs but left many more still unpatched. I suppose that writing RPGs is one of the most difficult tasks given the scope of those games, but still. It's like Bethesda releases late-alpha mid-beta quality games.

Well the fix in the latest version of DFQFIX worked as planned and I was able to make it into the Mantellan Crux!

Unfortunately I got stuck because one of the trapdoors wouldn't open even when I activate its switch. So... maybe Daggerfall isn't completable yet after all. 😁
