Now that Rayman's working on my Windows 98 computer, I want to get another one of my old favorites running on there, Duke Nukem!

Now here's the problem with this one: Duke 3D runs with perfect sound, but Duke II (with Music and Sound-Blaster Sound) sounds like udder crap!

I can change the sound settings for Duke 3D, but Duke II doesn't give me an option to do it. Therefore I need help on setting up my sound card to have the recommended configuration for the game.

Anyone here willing to help? Once again, I have a Sound Blaster PCI64 Direct Sound Driver.

Are you sure there isn't a way to change the sound settings for the game? Maybe there are some command-line parameters or a setup/config utility.

By "Sounds like udder crap" (you mean milk right) you mean it uses OPL2 right? It's meant to sound like that.

@HunterZ:
Yes I'm sure. There's absolutely no way to change the sound settings for the game.

@leileilol:
Sorry for being illiterate, but what's OPL2?
It didn't always sound the way it does on my computer. On Soundblaster settings, you're supposed to hear shooting, explosions, and stuff like that...

Well I know THAT, but it doesn't let you set the IRQ and DMA and stuff which I need to configure.

It takes these settings from the BLASTER environment variable.

Duke Nukem II used Creative ADPCM compressed sounds, wonder if that will work.

This may as well explain everything:

The "PCI" line of Sound Blaster cards aren't the same Sound Blasters DOS games were made for. They tend to have the worst FM emulation around too, and even worse support for PCM sound.

I would recommend an AWE32 or an AWE64, but Nukem II has freeze issues with those two cards.

Oh dear.

Well, I am getting another 98 computer anyway, one I know has a better sound card, so we'll see what happens when I get that computer.

Are you running the game from within windows 98 or from the real DOS-Prompt (By pressing F8 at boot)? Windows98 can distort DOS digital sound even on ISA sound cards. At the Dos prompt you need the PCI64 Dos emulation drivers, like sbinit.com.

In the past I could get quite a lot (like 95%) of Dos games running with an AudioPCI based soundcard such as the PCI64. Although both the FM and Wavetable music sounded poor.

Gerwin, how did you do it?

I tried using sbinit.com but that didn't work for me. I just got the same crappy sound I usually get in that game.

EDIT:
Yes I'm running the game in Pure DOS.

Okay,I downloaded Duke Nukem 2 shareware and first used an Aureal Vortex-2 PCI soundcard in Pure Dos: The Soundblaster effects are crap, almost PC-Speaker quality, but I think that is just the way the samples are. Using Adlib effects instead sounds just a little bit better, but not much.

Soundblaster effects did not work with my CMI8330 ISA soundcard, Adlib did.

You can even use both Adlib sound and Soundblaster sound at the same time in Duke Nukem II.
