Sounds like it's trying to use OPL3 for music (which doesn't work yet). By choosing an earlier SoundBlaster, you're forcing it to use OPL2. Manual OPL selection/override should be in the next version of VDMSound.

In the meantime, try going back to your sound setup program. After selecting SB16, tell it you're using two sound cards and that your second is "General MIDI". Let it choose the MIDI defaults and save the settings. You may need to tweak your MIDI output to suit your taste by using VDMSound's ADVANCED setting to change the MIDI output device from MIDI Mapper to "GS Wavetable" (this is presuming you're running 2000 or XP...you didn't say).
