First, I searched and found LOTS of results...43 pages of results, specifically, for starfighter 3000. I'm still owrking on narrowing it down to stuff that's relevant, but, in the mean time, if you guys would lend a hand, it would be most appreciated.

I did find this:

Error trying 2 run Starfighter3000

Now, there's a post there with a page of text for a Starfighter 3000 DosBox configuration file...am I supposed to do something special here? I expected to be able to install DosBox, mount the drive, type "install" or one of the other executable files, and away we go. All I get is the initial install screen (language selection), then it freezes.

Running latest version of DosBox

Dos version of Starfighter 3000.

Windows XP

Thanks in advance guys!

Sigh. Search for <starfighter> and you get about 12, including Star Fighter 3000 . (Rather ironic that there's a space in the subject line for that one.)

I do appreciate the attempt.

I just searched again. "Starfighter" in the DOS section yields ONE result:

Starfighter 3000

Search under PC yields TWO results:

Revised list of Voodoo games for DOS.
NV-1 Emulation

I could go on but it seems pointless when, at the bottom of the post, I'll just say that all the immediate results are 3DO references...not DOS.

I do thank you again, though, but I do feel the need to point out that not everyone who hasn't posted before is completely unfamiliar with how forums work or lacks the ability to search. Also, most games are released on multiple platforms, including consoles. This forum does, in fact, have a lot of easy to find references to Starfighter 3000, but not the DOS version.

Now, if the DOS version is supposed to be the same as the 3DO version, which I do not believe it is, then I must being doing something wrong because people at least claim the 3DO version is runnable (not playable) within DosBox. I would appreciate clarification on the similarities, if any.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

There has been relatively little discussion of any console games here in my experience, and certainly not games for the 3DO console. Starfighter for the PC is only a 3DO game in the sense that it was published by 3DO.

Starfighter 3000 was "published" by 3DO for the 3DO console, nothing else. From what I'm gathering, the version most people are trying to run in DosBox is the 3DO (console) version. The DOS version, which was not developed, published, or in any other fashion associated with, the 3DO version, is extremely rare.

No one would ever try to do this, as the 3DO and DOS-based IBM PC are entirely different machines and such an operation would be entirely doomed to failure!

I will check my boxed copy when I get home, as I am quite sure it has a 3DO logo on it.

Otherwise, all those other threads are completely mistaken in associating this game with 3DO in any way. This is also entirely possible.

I'm not above the idea of being mistaken...but that's the impression I've always been given. Either way...I looked back at the thread you posted earlier (which I had dismissed as not the same version of the game), and it says he's at least got it to install. I can not get it to run the install...at all. It just pops up to the language selection screen and, after I pick a language, DosBox freezes. It won't let me run the game from the disc or the install program...I've tried running from the CD and have been told taht getting DosBox to recognize a cd drive can be tricky so I copied the entirety of the disc to my hard drive...changed nothing.

I've followed the directions here to get DosBox to automatically mount drive c:

Should I be doing something different?

That certainly isn't going to get DOS to recognize it as a CD drive.

Perhaps you should clarify exactly what you tried to do when you tried running it from the CD.

I would think you'd be better off looking for a 3DO emulator if you want to run a 3DO game on your PC.

If this was really a game for the 3DO console, it would not be making it anywhere near as far as a language selection screen.

Are you referring to running the disc after I copied everything to my hard drive? Why would I want to run the disc if everything's on my drive?

I set the drive and typed "install"...like one would do in DOS with the original.

The installer might very well need to do other things than just copy stuff to the drive, and it might refuse to do those things if it doesn't recognize itself as running from a CD.

So did you do that from within DOSBox, or what?

Well I expected to be able to run the install program from within DosBox, off the hard drive, but you're right...it may not cooperate not being on the disc. I've pulled it off on a coupe other games, but they were designed for XP so it was a little less picky, I'm sure. I would like to be able to get this to run sans the disc, though...I'd like to be able to lock it back up with all my other old DOS games.

Yes within DosBox...I've actually tried, for kicks, from even the command prompt. She just fires up the language screen and freezes after I select one.

One common procedure for stubborn games is to rip the CD to a bin/cue which can be mounted in DOSBox using IMGMOUNT. The result behaves pretty much exactly the same but no longer requires the original disc.

Yes within DosBox...

Then you're going to have to tell us exactly what mounting commands you used when you mounted the CD.

Can you link me to a tutorial that covers this?

Ok. I'll try and post up what I've been doing when I get home...I tried to take notes everything.

If I wasn't so busy, I'd throw this at DOSBox myself. In the meantime:

Mine doesn't have the black "Studio 3DO" banner but does say it on the back. I do apologize for the misunderstanding. I'll start over with DosBox when I get home.

Yes, the version pictured above includes both PowerPC and DOS versions. Clearly the information on this game at Mobygames and Wikipedia needs to be amended.

Hey Jorpho...maybe you can help with something simpler...

I abandoned figuring this out with XP. It seems I can get it to work but it requires a big effort and this machine isn't meant for playing (it's what I work with). So, Ibroke out an older machine...it runs windows 98. When I first bought the game I played it on windows '95 or '98...I can't remember which, but I'm sure it wasn't DOS.

This '98 machine (laptop) does not have a CD drive...or any optical drives...I had to flash everything to my USB drive and transfer it that way. Doesn't work, though, as I've read the game absolutely MUST have a disc in the CD drive to operate. Do you know of any ways around this?
