I've got the game started, the sound works fine, and the color setup looks right, but whenefver I actually click on "start new chapter" so that I can play, the screen just has loads of lines and then dosbox turns off. any thoughts on how to fix that?

Is this a full legal version, or an illegal copy you downloaded from somewhere?

If it's the latter case, it could very well be incomplete or otherwise corrupted, and you should consider purchasing it at http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/the_settlers_2_gold_edition .
