I just got this CD-ROM drive from the USA. It was well packaged. It's made by NEC and is a bit unusual because it's only 2x speed, but it does not have a propriatory interface. Instead, it uses the later IDE interface. It was shipped to me in the "slave" configuration, but before testing I altered this to "master", and connected it to the IDE2 port on the socket 7 mobo. When I powered on the mobo, the CD-ROM drive was lifeless. Also, the autoexec/config ATAPI driver did not "see" the CD-ROM drive. So, I removed it from the IDE2 mobo port, and slaved it off the HDD instead. That worked. I tested it by installing Dark Forces. It's noticeably slower than a 4x CD-ROM drive (especially when copying over the large "textures.gob" file from the Dark Forces CD), but definitely quieter. Also, there are no "sharp" sounding seek access noises. It also has a quick "spin down" time too - no more than about 30 seconds. I think this unit would be ideal for an early DOS machine, but perhaps not suitable for a mid 90s DOS machine, where you have those games that have FMV spooled from a CD.

Fiddling with ancient, picky hardware makes you appreciate the comfort of working with modern hardware.
Life must have been painful if you were a complete novice back then and tried to understand for example this "semi" working ATAPI/IDE mess

I don't quite see the point of getting a 2x drive anyway. If you are only looking to get something quiet under dos, invest into a plextor drive and set it to quiet mode. IIRC, that is stored through reboot, so you need not load any driver for it. Also, you can use it for a quick backup of an aging hard disk.

I didn't realise that a Plextor IDE CD-ROM existed which has a "quiet mode"! Please can you tell me the model number? Thanks.

A lot of them have this. The quiet mode is just achieved by forcing the CD-Rom drive to not go beyond a certain speed. This worked for other drives as well I think

Something you might not notice right away is how the old optical drives have rather astronomical access times. Double speed drives are typically around 300ms. You had to consider this aspect when shopping because if it goes much higher you may end up with stuttering in apps that access it a lot.

BTW, there's the ability to use CD ISO images with the SHSUCDX driver package. You could have a hard drive of CD images and just load them up in DOS. That beats CDROMs any day, but it is somewhat annoying to set up the driver (commands to remember.)

Note to self - figure out how SHSUCDX works! 😀

Just use daemon tools instead. No big deal, no hard math, no sweat 😉

for Dos?

Lets be honest. How many fingers of one hand do you need to count the CD-based DOS only games? 😉

For windows 9x, you can slow a CD/DVD-ROM drive down using the free download "Nero DriveSpeed".

I have more CD based Dos games than finger on one hand.
AND the OP was asking about a DOS system not a Windows one.

I have an old Sony CDU311 in my 486 system and it's extremely quiet for an 8x optical drive... I've always liked the old Sony drives 😀
